Alter Ego is an acid house music group made of Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke. They achieved notability in 2004 with their track "Rocker", which became one of the year's defining Dance anthems, especially in Europe, and getting played on heavy rotation amongst the most popular Electroclash DJs such as Felix Da Housecat and 2 Many DJs. In the 2004 Groove Magazine Readers Poll, Alter Ego won three categories, taking out the award for Best Single for "Rocker", Best Album for "Transphormer", and also Best Live Act. French group Black Strobe took out Best Remix honours with their remix of Alter Ego's track, "Rocker". In 2005 Roman Flugel went onto produce the track "Gehts Noch", which was a huge hit across the world and was regularly played by many famous international dj's. ----- Black Strobe (sometimes Blackstrobe) were formed in Paris in 1997 by producer Arnaud Rebotini and DJ Ivan Smagghe, and were instrumental in the rise of the electroclash movement in the UK with their breakthrough single Me And Madonna. Originally producing in the house genre, they later became more influenced by music from the 1970s and 1980s, especially industrial post punk and camp, European electronic body music (or EBM). They are heavily influenced by such bands as Cabaret Voltaire, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 and Depeche Mode. Great early Blackstrobe production ! Today Arnaud Rebotini is well-known for his new wave/indus-inspired remixes, but at that time he was just making ELECTRO, looking toward Arthur Baker and the early NYC electroboogie scene. In fact "Paris Acid City" beat & bassline are a sample from Tony Cook & The Party Peoples "On The Floor (Rock It)", a classic electro / early garage track mixed by ... Timmy Regisford ! Far from Depeche Mode and Nitzer Ebb indeed ... Even the voice (repeating Paris Acid City) seems to come from some John Robie production, or perhaps from an early Chicagoan track (indeed Rebotini uses a lot of acid house sounds and effects on this).
