It was the first musical ballad released by the band, and is considered to be the precursor to "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "One" and "The Day That Never Comes" due to strong similarity in sound, structure, and subject matter. It was ranked as having the 24th best guitar solo ever by Guitar World magazine readers.[1] It is one of Metallica's most famous songs. This song was recorded at the 5th annualNorth Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, a two-day event which takes place in Potts Camp, MS. The North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic is hosted by Kenny Brown who played guitar with the late blues legend, RL Burnside. The event is patterned after an annual event held for decades by the late Otha Turner of Gravel Springs, MS who is Sharde Thomas' grandfather. Ms. Thomas learned to play the fife from Mr. Turner. Sharon Arden, (later Sharon Osbourne) daughter of Black Sabbath manager Don Arden, suggested former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio to replace Ozzy Osbourne in 1979. Dio officially joined in June, and the band began writing their next album. With a notably different vocal style from Osbourne's, Dio's addition to the band marked a change in Black Sabbath's sound. "They were totally different altogether", Iommi explains. "Not only voice-wise, but attitude-wise. Ozzy was a great showman, but when Dio came in, it was a different attitude, a different voice and a different musical approach, as far as vocals. Dio would sing across the riff, whereas Ozzy would follow the riff, like in "Iron Man". Ronnie came in and gave us another angle on writing." Dio's term in Black Sabbath has also brought the "metal horns" gesture to popularity in heavy metal subculture. Dio adopted it, originally a superstitious move to ward off the "evil eye", as a greeting to the audience. Since then, the gesture became widely copied by fans and other musicians alike.(RIP Dio) Geezer Butler temporarily left the band in September 1979, and was initially replaced by Geoff Nicholls of Quartz on bass.
