The Black Death Documentary 48.85 min. | 4.920792 avaliação | 26813 exibições The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, peaking in Europe between 1348 and 1350. Of several competing theories, the dominant explanation for the Black Death is the plague theory, which attributes the outbreak to the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Thought to have started in China, it travelled along the Silk Road and reached the Crimea by 1346. From there, probably carried by Oriental rat fleas living on the black rats that were regular passengers on merchant ships, it spread throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30--60 percent of Europe's population,[1] reducing the world's population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million in the 14th century. The aftermath of the plague created a series of religious, social and economic upheavals, which had profound effects on the course of European history. It took 150 years for Europe's population to recover. The plague returned at various times, killing more people, until it left Europe in the 19th century.. + Informações |

The Black Death 2.43 min. | 4.3636365 avaliação | 32393 exibições The Black Death was the worst plague to strike medieval Europe, leaving millions dead and irrevocably changing the social and economic landscape on the continent. The Bubonic plague emerged in Asia in the 1320s and 30s, and migrated westwards. By the year 1347 it had reached the Byzantine capital of Constantinople and from there was carried on ships to places such as Cyprus, Sicily and France. A year later the plague was in England and Germany, and continued to spread into northern and Eastern Europe. The plague was carried by fleas that would hitch rides on rats and humans, passing on the disease. Those who were infected would quickly become very ill with bleeding -- parts of the body would swell and become black. The patient would soon start vomiting blood and within two or three days be dead. The Black Death devastated the medieval world -- estimates of the death toll reach into the hundreds of millions. In the city of Florence the population fell from over a hundred thousand to less than fifty thousand, while one London account says that one-third of its people were killed by the pandemic. The plague hit some areas harder than others, but very few places in Europe were sparred. Medieval people believed that the disease was spread by 'bad air' and some scholars speculated that the problem was due to astronomical events. Most thought the real reason behind the plague was that it was God's punishment for people's sins -- and some sought to appease God by building .... + Informações |

Secrets of the Black Death - by Nature Video 5.10 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 57458 exibições The Black Death pandemic swept across Europe in the mid-14th century killing about half the population. It was caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis. This strain of bacteria is still around today, but intriguingly it causes far fewer deaths. To find out why, researchers reconstructed a medieval Yersinia pestis genome -- and compared it to the genomes of contemporary strains. The team, led by German scientist Johannes Krause, made use of recent technological advances in DNA recovery and analysis to examine DNA from the skeletons of four individuals buried in East Smithfield in London, a well-known medieval burial site for victims of the Black Death. Richard Pryor plays 'Black Death Metal' 7.88 min. | 4.620332 avaliação | 141897 exibições I doubt words can actually describe what you're about to see, but I'll try. This clip was the second-to-last "sketch" on the first episode of the ill-fated 'Richard Pryor Show' from 1977. Like many (most?) of the sketches from the four shows that were produced, it was not necessarily funny, as much as it was thought-provoking. On the surface, this is just Pryor in a funny costume pretending to play the guitar in front of a fake audience of extras and fans. But *sub*-textually, this was one of the most incredible things ever shown on a broadcast network (Tuesday nights at 8:00, on ABC.) (I imagine this is what a PCP freakout looks like, from the inside.) Pre-Spinal Tap Mystical Hobbit Rockers? Check. Druidic cloaks? Check. Smoke machines? Check. Pryor utilizing the long-accepted habit of slurring your words to get past censors? (See 'Louie Louie' by the Kingsmen for history's best example) Check. Pryor throwing giant bags of drugs and pills into his all-white teenage audience? Check. Pryor using a gas gun to kill the first few rows? Check. And finally, Richard Pryor taking a machine gun to his fans, killing every white teenager in the place? Double-check. Enjoy, and look for a very young Sandra Bernhard in the audience!. + Informações |

Meet Africa's BLACK DEATH! 2.98 min. | 4.072022 avaliação | 726725 exibições The Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of Africa's Big Five. African Buffalo are also known as "Black Death" because of their reputation of being very dangerous. They kill over 200 people a year. They are distributed from the high elevated forest to the open grasslands. They prefer to remain close to water sources as droughts have a devastating effect on their populations. Large herds use safety in numbers, as seen in the famous Battle at Kruger video here on You Tube. Males will also form smaller groups and protect the herds as they travel on the outskirts. Buffalo are hunted by trophy hunters due to their size and are taken by prides of lions. By allowing trophy hunting of the larger males, some argue it weakens the species as seen in recent reports regarding hunted wildlife. African buffalo populations are doing ok, but all wildlife need constant protection in order to keep on surviving for future generations. Sometimes they are confused with the slightly larger and endangered water buffalo from Asia. Cape Buffalo are members of the Bovidae family which includes domestic cattle.
