"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas carol that enumerates a series of increasingly grand gifts given on each of the twelve days of Christmas. Although first published in England in 1780, textual evidence may indicate the song is French in origin. The twelve days in the song are the twelve days starting Christmas day, or in some traditions, the day after Christmas (December 26) (Boxing Day or St. Stephen's Day, as being the feast day of St. Stephen Protomartyr) to the day before Epiphany, or the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6, or the Twelfth Day). Twelfth Night is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "the evening of the fifth of January, preceding Twelfth Day, the eve of the Epiphany, formerly the last day of the Christmas festivities and observed as a time of merrymaking." Although the specific origins of the chant are not known, it possibly began as a Twelfth Night "memories-and-forfeits" game, in which a leader recited a verse, each of the players repeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so on until one of the players made a mistake, with the player who erred having to pay a penalty, such as offering up a kiss or a sweet. This is how the game is offered up in its earliest known printed version, in the children's book Mirth without Mischief (c. 1780) published in England, which 100 years later Lady Gomme, a collector of folktales and rhymes, described playing every Twelfth Day night before eating mince pies and twelfth cake. Chuck Cecil of radio's "The Swinging Years" interviews Bing and Patty Andrews of the Andrews Sisters as an introduction to their 1944 million-seller recording of Cole Porter's "Don't Fence Me In". Cole actually wrote the song ten years earlier for a 20th Century Fox film musical called "Adios, Argentina" that was never produced. Although Cole wrote all of the music, the lyrics come from a poem Cole bought for $250 from Bob Fletcher, a highway engineer with the State of Montana. Cole reworked the poem into the song and tried to give Fletcher co-authorship credit but the publishers wouldn't allow it at the time. Fletcher later sued the publishers and won.. + Informações

Update: The sisters are singing apart of the background. I couldn't wait until Christmas to post this up so I'll just post it now!!! The song (from where I got it) says the Andrews Sisters are apart of this recording, but let me ask you a question, does it sound like the Andrews Sisters to you? I think the sisters are singing in background with the other background singers. I'm guessing that Patty (or maybe even Maxene/LaVerne), who is always the joker, is the one who's doing those high voice talking, "I'm rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, I've got a very shiny nose." but it doesn't sound like her talking voice... Recorded in 1950 and reached number 6 on the US Billboard charts. They recorded 47 songs with crooner Bing Crosby, 23 of which charted on Billboard, thus making the team one of the most successful pairings of acts in a recording studio in show business history. Their million-sellers with Crosby included "Pistol Packin' Mama", "Don't Fence Me In", "South America, Take It Away", and "Jingle Bells", among other yuletide favorites. The sisters' popularity was such that after the war they discovered some of their records had actually been smuggled into Germany after the labels had been changed to read "Hitler's Marching Songs". Their recording of Bei Mir Bist Du Schön became a favorite of the Nazis, until it was discovered that the song's composers were of Jewish descent.
