Billy had a long career in Country music until his tragic death in 2006. This song of his was popularized by kd Lang who did a great version of the song. One of my favourite memories of Billy was him guesting on the Marty Robbins 'Spotlight' show singing 'Cross The Brazos At Waco' with Marty playing guitar and harmonizing with Billy. Billy Walker was born in Ralls, Texas on January 14, 1929. Inspired by the music of Gene Autry as a teenager, he began his professional music career in 1947 at age 18, and joined the Big D Jamboree in Dallas in 1949. The same year, Hank Thompson helped him sign with Capitol Records after he worked with Walker in Waco.[2] His manager at the time had him wear a Lone Ranger-style black mask and billed him as The Traveling Texan, the Masked Singer of Country Songs. In 1951, Walker signed with Columbia Records and the following year joined the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he and Slim Whitman were responsible in part for Elvis Presley's first appearance on the radio program. In 1954, Walker scored his first hit with "Thank You for Calling". His early Columbia recordings were at a Dallas studio owned by producer Jim Beck, responsible for hits by Ray Price, Lefty Frizzell and others.[3] In 1955, Walker, Presley and Tillman Franks teamed up for a tour of West Texas. Walker soon became a cast member of ABC-TV's Ozark Jubilee in Springfield, Missouri, where he began a long friendship with host Red Foley.[3] [edit] Country music career After a brief attempt at rock 'n' roll, Walker played the Texas bar circuit before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1959 and joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1960. TheDemise of Original Country Music Original Country Music (OCM) is a type of music that has a unique sound and style with a blend of musical forms originally found in the Southern United States. It evolved from folk music, gospel music and old-time or hillbilly music in the 1920s. The term country music began to surface in the 1940s when the earlier term hillbilly music was considered degrading. Currently it is referred to as original country music (coined by Ray Price), thereby distinguishing it from the current pop oriented sound. Traditional artists had a distinctive sound, a sort of brand that made them easily identifiable from their peers. Hank Williams, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline all had distinguishable voices as did their peers. The music was presented in a heartfelt and professional manner. The industry fostered respect and it was exemplified by the method the artists presented themselves on and off stage. There were no faded or torn jeans, unmatched apparel or exposed cleavage. The Grand Ole Opry had stringent rules that not only governed the aforementioned, but also the type of musical instruments allowed on stage. Until the mid-1950s, the Opry didnt allow drums on stage and initially drums were placed back stage behind curtains. A native of west Texas who was active on The Grand Ole Opry, Billy Walker emerged from the talent-rich Dallas scene of the late '40s and early '50s. After a brief stint on Capitol, he was signed to Columbia in 1951 at almost exactly the same time as Ray Price. For a while, Walker, Price, and Lefty Frizzell were all recording at the legendary Jim Beck studio in Dallas, which did for '50s honky tonk what Sun Studio in Memphis did for rockabilly. In this video Jeannie performs "Funny How Time Slips Away" which she dedicated on her 2011 "Vintage Country" CD to Billy Walker, his wife Bettie, Charlie Lilly and Danny Patton. On May 20, 2006, Billy Walker performed at the Palm Lake Opry and RV Park in Foley, Alabama, in what turned out to be the last concert of his life. He and Bettie, Charlie and Danny were killed in a tragic accident on their way home to Nashville from that show. They are all greatly missed.. + Informações
