Os X surgiram em 1977, em Los Angeles, pela mão de John Doe (verdadeiro nome: John Duchac; baixista e compositor), sua esposa Exene Cervenka (nome verdadeiro: Christine Cervenka; vocais), Billy Zoom (guitarra) e DJ Bonebrake (bateria), e foram apadrinhados por Ray Manzarek, dos The Doors, que fez a produção do primeiro álbum Los Angeles, em 1980. Os álbuns seguintes Wild Gift, de 1981, e Under the Big Black, de 1982, demonstram a força e energia do seu som, que mistura hard rock a country e punk. Em 1983, lançam novo álbum, More Fun in the New World, com um som mais comercial. The set up was this: Kristine and I had just finished our concert with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra having just danced to "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." To then create the surprise Maestro Reineke spoke to the audience about what we were thankful for and what it meant to be in such a wonderful city and with such a magnificent orchestra. The main thought being we were Americans spending our Thanksgiving in Vancouver.
