Bill's just a regular guy. He's a truck driver from Sparta, Kentucky. He's a husband and a dad. And he's a genuinely good guy. He loves to talk, I learned, when I met him for the first time in the summer of 2003. We had a very nice conversation. He was invited to headline a local American Cancer Society Relay for Life benefit concert at a local horse ranch, and my family spent time with him and his wife Tina looking at the horses there at Crystal Valley, talking about which ones were our favorites. The local non-profit public service country music oldies station operated by the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, WVSB, was giving two tracks off his CD "One Lucky Man" heavy airplay. One of the songs got the most response from local listeners, a song called "He Rode On," about an old man who got picked on by a kid who eventually grew up finding himself in need of his services, and learned something about the old man he never knew before in the process, and perhaps something about himself. And from that song he had developed quite a following in these parts. He was a swing musician, but was destined to encounter new sounds in the clubs around New York's 52nd Street, where Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Lenny Tristano were playing at the time. After a short stay in New York he headed for California to see his idol Benny Goodman. Upon his return the club Three Deuces featured him as "The Be-Bop King of Sweden". Gillespie and Parker were in the audience. Stan Hasselgard was poised to bring the clarinet into the be-bop realm, when just outside Decatur, Illinois, on November 23,1948, his new-found love June Eckstine, the ex-wife of Billy Eckstine, fell asleep asleep at the wheel.
