I generally try to stay away from posting hits but sometimes I come across a rare pressing of one and it's worth sharing with the public. In this case, this record made it to #39 in 1969 so it almost was not a hit. The group was performing in clubs around Virginia and North Carolina when one night as a gag they decided to perform Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs' tune May I with a polka beat and pushed the horns up to the front of the tune....to the band's surprise, the crowd loved how they did the song and they performed it several times in their first night. They decided to release the song on a 45, however it was never the intended plug side of their local release. That distinction belonged to an instrumental (!) version of When A Man Loves A Woman. Their recording was first issued on the Beach record label out of Norfolk, Virginia and immediately caught the attention of someone in Jerry Ross' camp who saw the group live and picked up a copy of the single in the process (think along the lines of what happens in the movie That Thing You Do). The group signed with Ross' Heritage record label and the rest, as they say, is history. Copies of this tune on the Beach label are incredibly rare, to the point that most record price guides make no mention of this disc even existing! It's also worth noting that Ammon Tharp and Bill Deal co-share credits on this side of the 45 for being the vocalists on the record. One more from Bill Deal, Ammon Tharp & the Rhondels....their third and highest charting single, making it to #23 on the hot 100. With tunes as great as this, why didn't they do better on the charts? This promo had the same song on both sides (in mono on both sides) so it was obvious what side the record company was pushing...too bad they don't make records as good as this today! Like their last record, this one was also written by Ray Whitley and was first recorded by the Tams, who took it to #9 in 1963. Enjoy!. + Informações

Here's one for Frannie. It was the second hit for Bill Deal & The Rhondels with Ammon Tharp on lead vocals, and was a song written by a guy who was well known in the Atlanta area, Ray Whitley. This promo 45 was a mono/stereo promo 45. Anyone who knows this song, knows a true stereo mix has never turned up. The "stereo" side on the promo was a weak sounding rechanneled stereo mix (the same mix that turns up on pretty much every cd it has appeared on -- I'm not sure if the punchier true mono mix has ever turned up on cd!). This great little gem rarely gets mentioned in articles about the band. According to Australia's Go Set Magazine ( www.poparchives.com.au )it dived in the top 60 at 50 then disappeared without a trace. But take heart The Jackson 5's I Want You Back entered at 59 then dropped out. It failed to chart at all in? Brisbane and Perth, made #19 in Melbourne, #2 in Adelaide with 11 weeks in the charts and #18 in Sydney.... Bill Deal & the Rhondels (who consisted, at one point, in their classic recording years, of Mike Kerwin and Jeff Pollard on trumpets, Ronny Rosenbaum on trombone, Ken Dawson on sax, Don Quisenberry on bass, and Ammon Tharp at the drum kit) were among the first and best of a cadre of big-band rock outfits that began showing up in the mid- to late '60s. Deal and his septet released five successive nationally charting singles in 1969 and 1970 with a soulful dance-rock sound that turned them into stars. Deal was born in 1944 in Portsmouth, VA, where his father, Noah, owned a restaurant. The elder Deal played guitar and two of his other sons played drums and trombone, but William gravitated quickly to the keyboard and was taking piano lessons as early as age four. When he was eight years old, he pulled off a second-place finish in an appearance on Ted Mack's Amateur Hour. He switched from piano to organ and also picked up on the burgeoning R&B sounds that were starting to come up on the radio, and on record, and to reach white listeners. By his teens, he was immersed in R&B and was good enough to get professional engagements. He'd been in the business for years before the Rhondels charted a record, working as a session musician on others' records. Among other credits, he was the organist on Jimmy Soul's 1963 hit "If You Wanna Be Happy."
