Janis nearly missed her chance to make this historic performance in 1967. A Big Mama Thornton cover that only someone with a voice like Janis' could have done justice. Even with the crap quality of this clip, the power and uniqueness of her vocals come through loud and clear. An angel taken in her prime..

Macy Gray singing "Hound Dog" at the "Lightning In A Bottle" blues concert at NY City's Radio City Music Hall in 2003. "Hound Dog" of course was made popular by Elvis Presley in 1956. However it was originally sung by Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Macy Gray (born Natalie McIntyre, 6 September 1967 in Canton, Ohio, USA) is a Grammy Award-winning American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress, famed for her distinctive raspy voice, and a singing style heavily influenced by Billie Holiday and Betty Davis. I recently uploaded a budget-label recording of "Hound Dog," performed by Marv Lockard. While Elvis Presley's recording of the song is the version most people are familiar with, Willie May "Big Mama" Thornton's 1952 record is actually the original. I had to disable the auto-brake for this video, as the center hole on this record is enlarged, which causes the record to shift slightly and trigger the brake. From Wikipedia: Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton (December 11, 1926 -- July 25, 1984) was an American rhythm and blues singer and songwriter. Thornton began her recording career in Houston, signing a recording contract with Peacock Records in 1951. While working with another Peacock artist, Johnny Otis, she recorded "Hound Dog", a song that composers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller had given her in Los Angeles. The record was produced by Johnny Otis, and went to number one on the R&B chart. Although the record made her a star, she saw little of the profits. She ....

Morta em 1970 devido à uma overdose de heroína[3][9], Janis lançou apenas quatro álbuns: Big Brother and the Holding Company (1967), Cheap Thrills (1968), I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!

Along with Joplin was Sam Andrew on guitar, James Gurley on lead guitar, Peter Albin on bass and David Getz on drums, percussion. And yes, that was a quick shot of Mama Cass Elliot looking on at the end, and by her facial expression you could tell she was wowed by the performance! "Ball 'n' Chain" is a song by Big Mama Thornton. The song was featured in Big Brother and the Holding Company's Cheap Thrills album; this was their last album with Janis Joplin as primary lead vocalist. Joplin's 1967 rendition of "Ball 'n' Chain" at the Monterey Pop Festival is widely considered to be one of her best performances. The song also became one of her more popular pieces to sing in concert. "Janis Lyn Joplin" (Jan. 19, 1943 - Oct. 4, 1970) was an American singer and songwriter from Port Arthur Texas. Early in her life, Joplin cultivated a rebellious and unconventional lifestyle, becoming a beatnik poet. She began her singing career as a folk and blues singer in San Francisco, playing clubs and bars with her guitar and auto-harp. She first rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the psychedelic-acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist with her more soulful and bluesy backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band.
