From Wikipedia: BEN BERNIE (May 30, 1891, Bayonne, New Jersey - October 23, 1943), born Bernard Anzelevitz, was an American jazz violinist and radio personality, often introduced as The Old Maestro. He was noted for his showmanship and memorable bits of snappy dialogue. By the age of 15 he was teaching violin, but this experience apparently diminished his interest in the violin for a time. He returned to music doing vaudeville, appearing with Phil Baker as Baker and Bernie, but he met with little success until 1922 when he joined his first orchestra. Later, he had his own band, "The Lads," seen in the early DeForest Phonofilm sound short, Ben Bernie and All the Lads (1924-1925), featuring pianist Oscar Levant. He toured with Maurice Chevalier and also toured in Europe. Bernie's orchestra recorded throughout the 1920s and 1930s, mainly for Vocalion and Brunswick. In 1925 Ben Bernie and his orchestra did the first recording of the most famous of Ben Bernie's compositions: "Sweet Georgia Brown". ------------------------------- Recording: Ben Bernie & His Hotel Roosevelt Orch., vocals: Bessinger, Wright, O'Keefe - Calling Me Home, Brunswick 1926. + Informações

Bernie was a free-mason, member of Keystone Lodge n.º 235, New York City. "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" is a US popular song from 1925. The music was written by Walter Donaldson and the lyrics by Gus Kahn. It was a hit for Ace Brigode in 1925 and for Eddie Cantor in 1930. It was later a hit for Rick Nelson in the 1950s and Frank Sinatra in the 1960s. The song has become a standard that has been recorded by over 100 artists in genres from jazz to rock, marimba and country. Opening line: "Yes sir, that's my ba - by, no sir, don't mean may - be, Yes sir, that's my ba - by now...." According to one source, the song was written when Donaldson & Kahn were visiting Eddie Cantor. Cantor's daughter Marjorie brought out one of her favorite toys, a walking mechanical pig. She wound it up and it started walking in rhythm while 2 notes kept coming from the little creature. Kahn was inspired and started working lyrics to these notes in rhythm with the pig, coming up with the title and opening line of the chorus in short order. Ben Bernie & His Hotel Roosevelt Orch. with Vocal Chorus - Crying For The Carolines (from "Spring Is Here"); (Words by Sam H. Lewis and Joe Young, Music by Harry Warren), Brunswick 1929 Originally it was sung by Ruth Etting, in 1929. What's for me most haunting in Ben Bernie's interpretation, is he plays the the blues, the "choral". The performances I know, are mostly jazzy, upbeat, like an excellent Ben Pollack's version, which can be found at kspm01 site. In that sense, Ben Bernie melancholic blues, or slowfox - whatever - is quite unique.. + Informações
