The rush of excitement was running along the core of my veins, I looked behind me to see my best friend, Logan, trying to catch his breath with every step he took against the cold cement of this bitter night in New York, City. I felt my body trench into the hardness of the concrete floor, as the pain soared through the thickness of my bones. I quickly found the strength to pick my body up and continue on the run from the red & blue lights that lingered not so far away. The bright lights of the city were our only direction to our escape; our bodies would swiftly come in contact with the soar of people that crowded the streets of a bright but dark city. You spend your working hours - while sensible people are sleeping - stuck in smoky bars, surrounded by drunks who spill beer on the instruments, shout their conversations over the music and demand songs they don't actually know the names of. Against that backdrop is set Janet Seidel's new show, We Get Requests. Seidel spent many years playing in piano bars, and even when she moved to more salubrious establishments, all that changed was the price of the drinks the drunks were swilling. She once even had to cough her way through a cigar promotion. The first half of the show consisted of songs she remembers being requested: Your Feet's Too Big (Billy Connolly), A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square (an unwell Jeffrey Bernard), It's Only A Paper Moon (Sir Garfield Sobers) and My Attorney Bernie, which apparently appealed to the legal soaks at the Wentworth. Towards the set's conclusion Seidel's collaborators - bassist (and brother) David Seidel and guitarist Chuck Morgan - revisited a routine incorporated into her last show. Having left the stage for her to do a solo song, they marauded through the audience and plonked themselves on two stools at the piano, using it as a bar for their drinks and chips. Arrived home near 6PM, a long 1 hour drive in this 90+ weather, especially without air-conditioning. My ol' bomber needs a little err a lot of work. Someday, I'll get a new or at least a newer vehicle. Wah! Sweaty and irritable I was looking forward to getting into shorts, sandals and the fridge, for an icy cold "barley pop." Ah! Much better and headed out to sit in our lil' shaded garden bistro to enjoy. . . no sooner had I set my beer down and pulled out a bar stool, a fluttering directed my attention to the walkway garden to my left . . There! Something desperate, awkward and frantic_ a hummingbird upside down with its' legs bound by the remnants of a spider web. Stepping over, I bent down, as the drama was unfolding near ground level, I swiped away the rolled up strands. The bird probably destroyed the web and in so doing parts spun up like little cables around its' legs holding her securely to the bottom of the fence. I expected the bird to explode up and away, but fell the few inches into the soft ice plant. She was splayed, wings outspread, head up high and motionless. Oh no! This is it! She's offering herself up. I was witnessing the noble creature surrendering life. Not knowing how long she'd been struggling in the heat, maybe she's overheated and out of energy.
