2002 (Shirley's appearance on a BAFTA James Bond Tribute Show - Performing these two theme songs decades after her original recordings....The Dame's still got it!) ABOUT the song, Goldfinger: "Goldfinger" was the title song from the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger. Composed by John Barry and with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, the song was performed by Shirley Bassey for the film's opening and closing title sequences, as well as the soundtrack album release. The single release of the song gave Bassey her only Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit, peaking at number eight; in the United Kingdom, the single reached #21. In 2008, the single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Upon being asked to create a theme song for the film-in-progress, Bricusse and Newley looked at each other instantly and sang out, "Goldfinger . . . wider than a mile," reprising "Moon River," the successful theme song from Breakfast at Tiffany's. Originally, Newley recorded the song, but it was re-recorded by Bassey with George Martin and Jimmy Page as a session guitarist. Newley's version was later released in 1992 to mark the 30th Anniversary of James Bond on film, in a compilation collector's edition: The Best of Bond...James Bond. The release on vinyl of Bassey's version sold more than a million copies in the United States (Guinness Book of Records)[citation needed], and it also reached number one on the Japanese charts and the top ten of many European countries. The song has become .... + Informações

1982 (Shirley Bassey hosted a 'Summertime TV Special' back in 1982 and in this clip she performs two songs from her 1982 LP titled, 'Shirley Bassey - All By Myself.' The first song is a cover of Melissa Manchester's hit, 'Don't Cry Out Loud' and the second song is the title track of Shirley's LP 'All By Myself'. This song was a huge hit for another amazing/great vocalist, Celine Dion. Note on Don't Cry Out Loud: Shirley was first offered the song, 'Don't Cry Out Loud' but she turned it down thinking it wasn't her type of song. She subsequently regretted her decision, as it was a huge hit for Manchester, Elkie Brooks (UK), and Rita Coolidge had some radio play with this song in Japan, each recording with a different arrangement. Hits aside, Shirley's vocal range, including high register notes are unbelievable, and her vibrato on the last note....ALLLLLLL...is simply spine tingling. Please...no comparisons...just enjoy! Notes on All By Myself: Celine Dion loved Shirley's recording of 'All By Myself' which gave her the inspiration to record it herself. Shirley performs the song closer to the music originally written, but when Celine decided to record the song, her musical directors added some extra falsetto musical score into the mix, which I personally think is great. It transformed this song into something new, and thus translated into HIT! Shirley is one of the very few of the older generation who has the powerful pipes to sing the song via the newer arrangement, of .... + Informações

1957 (A young Shirley Bassey recorded this Johnny Mercer / Harold Arlen American Songbook Standard back in 1956 and it was released as a track on her first LP in 1957. One of the songs from this LP, 'Born To Sing The Blues' was released as a single in 1956. Shirley has recorded & performed many genre's of music over her past 58+ years in show business due to her powerful voice & musical instincts, but jazz & the blues were among the first that she mastered. ABOUT this song: "Blues in the Night" is a popular song which has become a pop standard and is generally considered to be part of the Great American Songbook. The music was written by Harold Arlen, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer, for a 1941 film begun with the working title Hot Nocturne, but finally released as Blues in the Night. The song is sung in the film by William Gillespie. Arlen and Mercer wrote the entire score for the 1941 film Blues in the Night. One requirement was for a blues song to be sung in a jail cell. As usual with Mercer, the composer wrote the music first, then Mercer wrote the words. Arlen said, The whole thing just poured out. And I knew in my guts, without even thinking what Johnny would write for a lyric, that this was strong, strong, strong! When Mercer wrote "Blues in the Night", I went over his lyric and I started to hum it over his desk. It sounded marvelous once I got to the second stanza but that first twelve was weak tea. On the third or fourth page of his work sheets I saw some lines?one .... + Informações

1976 (Cabaret style live performance of this classic Francois / Revaux song, with English Lyrics by Paul Anka on Shirley Bassey's 1976 TV Variety Series. Shirley performs this song in the very dramatic & emotional Cabaret Style where she acts out many of the lyrics. Shirley usually takes a song written for a musical, and re-arranges it to have more of a POP flavor. But, this song is just the opposite. If there ever was a musical which included this song, Shirley's powerfully dramatic version as shown in this clip would be the epitome of how it should be sung in the big belter final act. This song for the most part has been recorded and sung by male artists, such as Shirley's ole friend Frank Sinatra going back to the early days of Las Vegas, but here Shirley the DIVA does her gender proud, and when she lifts the roof with her big belter ending, 'AND I DID IT.....MY WAY' people listening and watching will believe it! ABOUT this song: "My Way" is a song with lyrics written by Paul Anka and popularized by Frank Sinatra. The melody is based on a French song "Comme d'habitude" composed by Claude François and Jacques Revaux. Anka's English lyrics are unrelated to the original French by Claude François and Gilles Thibaut and Anka is credited as a co-composer of "My Way" because he largely re-wrote the song. "My Way" is often quoted as the most remade song in history. Paul Anka heard the original 1967 French pop song, Comme d'habitude (as usual) performed by Claude Francois with .... + Informações

One of the songs from this LP, 'Born To Sing The Blues' was released as a single in 1956. Shirley has recorded & performed many genre's of music over her past 58+ years in show business due to her powerful voice & musical instincts, but jazz & the blues were among the first that she mastered. ABOUT This song: "The Birth of the Blues" is a popular song. The music was written by Ray Henderson, the lyrics by Buddy G. DeSylva and Lew Brown. The song was published in 1926, and recorded by Cab Calloway in 1943 or 1944. The song was later a hit for Frank Sinatra and was frequently performed by popular singers such as Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis, Jr., Shirley Bassey, Keely Smith, Jack Teagarden and Pearl Bailey. An Oscar nominated (Music Scoring) film "Birth of the Blues" starring Bing Crosby was released in 1941. LYRICS: Oh, they say some people long ago Were searching for a diffrent tune One that they could croon As only they can They only had the rhythm soul They started swaying to and fro They didn't know just what to use And this is how the blues really began They heard the breeze in the trees Singing weird melodies And they made that the start of the blues And from a jail came the wail Of a down-hearted frail And they played that As part of the blues From a whippoorwill Out on a hill They took a new note Pushed it through a horn .... + Informações

1962 (Young Shirley Bassey recorded this wonderful track on her 1962 LP titled, (Shirley Bassey with Nelson Riddle, 'Shirley Bassey - Let's Face The Music' - Shirley started show business back in 1953 as a chorus girl, before shortly thereafter beginning her tremendously lucrative carer as a recording artist. This year (2012), Dame Shirley will be celebrating 59 years in the business. She is still performing and recording, and her last CD a few year back was a hit for her. LP Review by Bruce Eder: Bassey's fourth EMI/Columbia album is regarded as the magnum opus of her pre-Goldfinger career, bringing her together with conductor/arranger Nelson Riddle. (Ironically, it was Riddle's still being under contract to Capitol Records which prevented him from working with Sinatra on Reprise at the time, that made this record possible). Riddle approached this album from the standpoint that less is more, providing elegant and subdued accompaniment that emphasized the strings. Bassey's voice comes across with a delicacy of nuance that is startling to hear, achieving new levels of subtlety on this album. One may disagree with the order of the songs -- the moodily expressive "I Should Care," reminiscent of Judy Garland at her best, would be the ideal opener -- but not with the overall content of this album. Throughout Let's Face the Music, one almost gets a sense of Bassey slipping inside these songs, becoming part of them and they her, rather than merely performing them. The .... + Informações

Shirley's first recordings were in 1955 & 56, and a few of these songs became singles, such as the song, 'Born To Sing The Blues.' Even as a teenager, anyone listening could easily see that Ms. Bassey had a huge voice waiting to happen. Over the years Ms. Bassey's voice has only gotten stronger, and in 2013, She will be celebrating 60 Years in the Music Industry. Most people will recognize Bassey for her three James Bond Theme songs, 'Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker' but it is her Huge/Powerful voice that has allowed her to crossover into many different genres of music, which as a result has kept her at the top of her game for almost 6 decades. 1990 (Big Band style arrangements were made for Shirley's powerfully rich voice. Bassey is the bridge between older & younger generations as she can sing and has recorded many genres of music over her 59 years in the business. This lady turned 75 this year and her voice is still as powerful as ever, and she is still performing and recording! Such a full-out orchestral arrangement would drown out most singers, but not Bassey. This is 'old style' entertainment at its very best! ABOUT this song: "Almost Like Being in Love" is a popular song published in 1947. The music was written by Frederick Loewe, and the lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. The song was made popular by David Brooks and Marion Bell in the musical Brigadoon. It was later performed in the 1954 film version by Gene Kelly. The song was revived in a downbeat ballad version by singer Michael Johnson (#32, 1978). This song was also made popular by British singing sensation Dame Shirley Bassey, Nat King Cole recorded more than one version of the song. Other singers who have recorded "Almost Like Being in Love" include Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. A later version by Nat King Cole was used as the closing song in the 1993 movie Groundhog Day which starred Bill Murray. 1990 (Shirley performs a great song from the past, which was a favorite of her idol & friend, Ms. Judy Garland) ABOUT When You're Smiling: "When You're Smiling" is a song by Larry Shay, Mark Fisher, and Joe Goodwin (June 6, 1889-July 31, 1943), and made famous by Louis Armstrong, who recorded it at least three times, in 1929, 1932, and 1956. Duke Ellington also recorded it several times earlier in his career. Many other recordings exist, for example those by Studies in Swing No.3, Louis Prima, Frank Sinatra and Patti Page. Cliff Bruner brought it to the country charts in 1939. And also Nat King Cole sung it. It was adopted by Leicester City FC as the club anthem, and can be heard at many of the team's games. In 1961, Judy Garland performed the song at the Judy at Carnegie Hall concert. Shirley Bassey performed this song, live, many times during the late 70's through early 80's as a tribute to her idol, and friend, Judy Garland. Dean Martin also sang it, sometimes parodying it as "When You're Drinkin'". LYRICS: When You're Smiling When you're smiling, when you're smiling The whole world, smiles with you. When you're laughing, when you're Laughing The sun comes shining through. But when you're crying, You bring on the rain. So stop your sighing, Be happy again. 1978 (Verteran vocalist/entertainer Shirley Bassey recorded a great cover of This Bacharach/David 60's era classic. This song was included on Shirley's 1978 LP titled, 'The Magic Is You'. This song was originally brought from the USA to the UK for Shirley to record, but music producer George Martin (The Beatles) decided to give it to a relatively unknown artist from Liverpool, and a good friend of Shirley's for many decades, Cilla Black. This song was a top 10 hit for Dionne Warwick in the USA, in 1963, one year earlier than Black's version released in 1964. Although it wasn't in the cards for Shirley to record this song in the 60's, she has always loved it, and decided to record it as a slightly more mature artist in her 40s back in 1978. Hit or not for Shirley, it's still a great recording! I personally like both Warwick's and Black's version of this song as well. Many people don't want to see this happen, but I think a great song really can be sung/recorded by more than one artist, thus bringing each singer's personality and singing style into the song. Bacharach and David sure liked it because they have received royalties from both Warwick and Black, as well as every artist who has recorded this song for every unit sold. "Anyone Who Had a Heart" is a song written by Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) for Dionne Warwick in 1963. Warwick's original recording hit the Top Ten in the United States, Canada, Spain, The Netherlands, South Africa, Belgium and .... + Informações

1975 (Here is an emotional, but beautifully sung track from verteran vocalist/entertainer, Shirley Bassey) ABOUT the LP, Good, Bad But Beautiful: Good, Bad but Beautiful is a 1975 album by Shirley Bassey. In the first half of the decade, Bassey recorded nine albums, with three making the top ten. In March 1975, Bassey released a compilation that became her highest-charting album to date, The Shirley Bassey Singles Album (#2), and reflects the momentum Bassey had maintained since her 1970 "comeback". Good, Bad but Beautiful, released in the autumn of 1975, spent seven weeks on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at #13. The album reflects the formula that brought Bassey back to the charts: a combination of contemporary songs combined with her forte of standards, show tunes, and torch songs, featuring arrangements aimed squarely at the adult contemporary, or middle-of-the-road, audience. This was also achieved by modifying her backup orchestra to include electric guitars, a string and brass section with a more contemporary sound, and drumming that is more soft rock-oriented than jazz-oriented, while side two's opener, "Feel Like Makin' Love" displays a smooth jazz style. This was Bassey's seventh album of the 1970s to make the Billboard 200, peaking at #186. It also reached #54 on the US R&B chart. In the UK the album was awarded a silver disc six weeks after it was released. The original release was in stereo on vinyl and cassette. 1976 (Shirley Bassey performs the beautiful Welsh Anthem titled, 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' on location at Harlech Castle in Wales. Shirley is accompanied by the Wales Male Voice Choir. Although the majority of the people of Wales speak only English, this Welsh National Anthem has never been Re-Written with English lyrics. No need....why fool around with perfection. Although the audio quality was not the best back in 1976, Shirley's beautiful, yet powerful vocals deliver the inspiration this song is intended to deliver.) Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Welsh pronunciation: [he?n wl??d v? ?n?adai]) is the national anthem of Wales. The title -- taken from the first words of the song -- means "Old Land of My Fathers", usually rendered in English as simply "Land of My Fathers". The words were written by Evan James and the tune composed by his son, James James, both residents of Pontypridd, Glamorgan, in January 1856. The earliest written copy survives and is part of the collections of the National Library of Wales. Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is the Welsh National Anthem. It has been established by tradition over a hundred years; and although in common with other British anthems, it has not been established as such by law, it has been used in the context of a national anthem at official governmental ceremonies including the opening of the Welsh Assembly and at receptions of the British monarchy. It is recognised and used as an anthem at both national and local events in Wales. Usually this will be the .... + Informações

Shirley and Des OConnor then perform a duet of the song, 'Let's Do It' with some updated words. ABOUT the song, 'This Is My Life': This Is My Life (La vita) is a 1968 album by Shirley Bassey that was released in Italy on the United Artists label (UA 9035). Bassey had started living as a tax exile in 1968, and was not permitted to work in Britain for two years. In 1968 Bassey performed at the Sanremo Music Festival in Italy singing the song "La vita." This song was originally written by Bruno Canfora, with (Italian) lyrics by Antonio Amurri. For the song Bassey sang at the festival, the lyrics were partially rewritten in English by Norman Newell. Side one of the album included only Italian songs with the exception of "La vita" which is the version with a mix of Italian and English lyrics. Side two is an edited version of the This Is My Life album that was released in Britain and the USA, with the addition of "To Give" which was only included in this album and on a single. Of the six songs recorded in Italian on this album only "La vita" has had a CD release. It appeared on the 1994 boxset Bassey - The EMI/UA Years 1959 - 1979.
