Dutch artist VanVelzen and Belgian performer Bart Peeters were guests at the live broadcast of Radio 2's "En nu serieus" (And now... seriously) on the 28th of may 2011. Both artists performed live versions of their songs when they decided, backstage, to do a song together. No time for rehearsing, barely the time to pick a song. The Yéh-Yéhs was a fun project of Bart Peeters (see Radios) and Hugo Matthysen, together with Marcel Vanthilt (known from Arbeid Adelt!). The project was a spinoff from the television show Pop-Elektron (with "De Hermannen") and a predecessor to the immensely popular radio show Het Leugenpaleis and groups like the Clemens Peerens Explosition. The Yéh-Yéhs made a smashing debut (and farewell) single with "The Seven Kings of Rock & Roll". I wrote the Matador song in Mexico, in December, 1978. Very influenced by the atmosphere, the lyrics seemed to roll right off my tongue with amazing ease. Anything sophisticated such as references to Goya, and Barcelona came along later. The basics were all there - I knew I had a special song but never would I think it would become such a great hit internationally (but for some strange reason, it was never released as a single in the US) . For me, Matador continues my personal love and connection to "Spanish" type songs like "Spanish Town", and later "El Salvador", "Spanish Manners", "Spanish Blood" and in the future "Spanish Steps" perhaps. When I finally recorded this mysterious song, with Herb Alpert, Anton Fig, Alan Freedman, and a picture of Manet's Matador on my music stand, it flowed out perfectly. Di dit dit dit dit dit dit dit.
