Barbara Acklin has stated in interviews, and in the pages of Robert Pruter's excellent book "Chicago Soul" that she recorded "Am I the Same Girl" at a session, but it was not released as a single until early 1969. She states that her vocal track was removed, and a piano "lead" replaced for the Young-Holt Unlimited 45rpm release of the retitled tune, "Soulful Strut" in the fall of 1968. Upon graduation, she was hired as a secretary for local record label by her cousin, saxophonist Monk Higgins. Her first release was under the name Barbara Allen on his Special Agent label. Later, Higgins used Acklin as a background singer on his Chess Records sessions. In 1966, Acklin began working as a receptionist for record producer Carl Davis at Brunswick Records. Always keeping in mind her goal of becoming a recording star, she persistently asked Davis to record her. Davis said that he would, but, in the meantime, he encouraged her to keep writing songs. Cornering Brunswick Records star Jackie Wilson, Acklin had him listen to a tune that she co-wrote with David Scott (formerly of The Exciters). Wilson liked it and passed it on to Davis. Released September 1966, the song, "Whispers (Gettin Louder)" went to number six R&B and number 11 on the Hot 100 in the fall of 1966. The song helped re-launch his career in the late 1960s. To return the favor, Wilson helped Acklin secure a recording contract with Brunswick. Acklin's first chart success came from "Show Me the Way to Go," a duet with Chandler, reaching number 30 R&B in the spring of 1968. First recorded in 1968 by Barbara Acklin, "Am I the Same Girl" was most successful as a 1992 release by Swing Out Sister. However the song had its greatest impact as a 1968-69 instrumental hit single by Young-Holt Unlimited under the title "Soulful Strut". Although Barbara Acklin ? who was married to Eugene Record ? recorded the song first, producer Carl Davis removed her voice from the track, replaced it with a piano solo by Floyd Morris, and released the resultant track in November 1968 as "Soulful Strut" credited to Young-Holt Unlimited; it became a #3 hit in the United States. (In fact neither Eldee Young nor Red Holt is believed to have played on the track, which rather is the work of session players identified only as the Brunswick Studio Band.) Super production at Brunswick by Eugene Record, with backing by the Chi-Lites, this is just a stunning recording. Barbara, who also composed this is at her peak for sure. So, Samotta enjoy this one as I'm sure so many others will. My favorite 'little guy' , Preston gets some of the photo honors as well.
