Singapore's Music Documentary: The Local Alternative : TopVideos.com.br Singapore's Music Documentary: The Local Alternative
22.08 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 8 exibições

This is a 1996 documentary on Singapore's indie alternative music scene. It's the full monty, from rock ballads, punk / metal to experimental music. Still relevant today, the film serves to highlight the dilemma of local talent being massively understated by their local population, in favor of foreign commercial music acts. Recognized anyone in the video? This video is sadly low in quality and out of sync, because the digitized S-VHS tape was badly preserved (eg fungus on tape). As such, I was contemplating on sharing this, but figured it could be worth something to someone. The production team consisted of Rachel, Greg, Isaiah and me, and it was produced under our Mass Communication program at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. If you want a blast from the past, check out our early web site about the Singapore alternative music scene at substitute.com. No updates since 1997, maintained as a digital artifact for all to see. From www.lejlamgarrija.com Another clip this time way back from 1990. A small castle built between the rural village of Mgarr and the Gnejna beach, called Zamitellu, acting as a watch tower, is the center piece of a legend kept alive for generations in Mgarr. This childrens' play illustrates the story and also reveals typical Maltese folklore such as the serenade and the traditional wedding gifts and other traditions. From a video by Photo Bruno, Msida. Unfortunately only a badly preserved second generation copy was available for the transfer to Youtube. Being longer then 10 minutes, the play will be posted in two parts. Thanks to Richard from VideoPower who donated the SVHS deck used for the video transfer. + Informações

Mysterious Maya Calendar & Mural Uncovered : TopVideos.com.br Mysterious Maya Calendar & Mural Uncovered

Link for more: video.nationalgeographic.com May 10, 2012?Researchers have uncovered a remarkably well-preserved Maya mural and calendar markings that add perspective on Maya thinking. National Geographic Society grantee William Saturno and his team uncovered the artwork in what was either a home or workplace abandoned hundreds of years ago. The findings are published in the May 11 issue of the journal Science and the June edition of National Geographic magazine. Deep in the rain forest of Guatemala, archaeologist and National Geographic grantee William Saturno has discovered a Mayan art gem. Buried for centuries in the Mayan city of Xultún, where tens of thousands are believed to have lived -- is what may have been a Mayan home or workspace. Inside on the walls: a well-preserved mural and some mysterious astronomical and calendar symbols. The rocks chipped away by Saturno were apparently placed there by the Maya as a common practice to fill in structures that were no longer needed. One wall features a seated king wearing blue feathers-- seen on the far right. And on the far left, you can see one of three male figures wearing uniform mitre-style head dresses. Such a display of a group has not been seen that way before in Mayan art. And a third preserved wall, though badly eroded, is dominated by numerical figures, including columns of numbers representing counting and calendar calculation. Saturno and his team say the symbols reflect a certain world view: that the Maya .... + Informações

Swat: Militants are holding sway in the restive Swat valley of Pakistan and are destroying the heritage of Gandhara Civilisation there. In the absence of proper security arrangements, a historic rock-carved image of Buddha has already been destroyed partially. Situated on the banks of River Swat, anciently known as Svastu, the scenic Valley of Swat was the centre of Buddhist civilisation. In ancient scripts Swat is known as Udhyana meaning garden or park. Historians say Ashoka introduced Buddhism to Swat spreading it to Peshawar, Taxila, and beyond into Afghanistan. However, by seventh and eighth centuries AD, Buddhist Civilisation was losing its influence in this area. Rock carvings and historical sites preserve this part of history in the mountains and plains of Swat. Images and statues of Buddha carved in different forms are permanent record of the material remains of mankind. We reconstruct the history of Buddhism with their help. Now these carvings which you see hundreds of them in Swat, says Director Archeology Departmen, NWFP, Professor Fidaullah Sehrai. Growing militancy during the last one year has emerged as a major threat to these rare sites in the restive valley. Some sites have already been damaged. Jehanabad Buddha is one such complete and inspiring symbol of Gandhara Art. Preserved by nature due to difficult location, this seven meter tall meditating Buddha carved some 20 feet high from the land, survived many attacks since 1994. However, the last one .... + Informações

The Gordon Innes Collection. : TopVideos.com.br The Gordon Innes Collection.
7.25 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 1182 exibições

To mark the 2011 UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on the 27th November. This silent footage is only a small part of a personal collection donated to Film Australia in 2006 and now part of the NFSA FAC Library collection. Donated by Mr Gordon Innes it represents his family's private film history from the mid 1920s to 1930s. The films were presented to the Film Australia Library in a state of critical disintegration. The approximately 10 rolls of 16mm, black and white, mute, footage were badly affected by vinegar syndrome and had shrunk to a state as to be almost unviewable on most standard equipment. A methodical, time consuming and expensive restoration involving repair to the original components and then copying to new film stock was undertaken before telecining to digital tape stock and digitising to file formats could take place. With over two hours of footage now preserved the subject matter reveals the personal memories of an affluent Australian family at play on travels around Australia and the world. At the same time it records some significant events for the nation at a time when film recording was still in its earliest forms. Many of the institutional and professional film collections from this time are well known and thankfully well preserved. In recent times interest has turned to the more ephemeral collections coming to light from the hitherto unknown private collections of amateur filmmaking and "home movies". In this preview we see early shots of .... + Informações

Economics 101 with Glenn Beck: The Kondratiev Wave and the Value of Loss in Capitalism : TopVideos.com.br Economics 101 with Glenn Beck: The Kondratiev Wave and the Value of Loss in Capitalism
9.87 min. | 4.4594593 avaliação | 5511 exibições

Capitalism is a profit and loss system. Profit rewards good ideas, good management, satisfied customers, and reasonable risk. Loss punishes those who take foolish risks, manage badly, abuse customers, etc. Loss often saves companies and jobs. When the government bailed out the airlines decades ago, they still went bankrupt did they? But after they did the airlines reorganized and did better. Some airlines went under and they were bought up by the good ones so parts of those companies were preserved. When Studebaker went under the good parts of it were bought up. If GM had been allowed to reorganize under bankruptcy or if the good parts of GM would have been bought up the company would have relaunched itself likely better than the position it is in today. On the long-term macro-economic scale, the government, Keynes, and socialist/progressives try to stop that wave or its impact; doing so is often foolish and damaging to an economy in the long-term. Government tries to prop up the economy in the down cycle or during recessions by spending and rewarding loss with bailouts so that the utility effect of loss isn't allowed to progress as it should. The ill-conceived stimulus package is an example, while a small percentage of it was helpful, most of it was good money after bad. Glenn also talks about how capital and investments go where they are treated well. China has lower corporate taxes and capital gains taxes than the United States. China also does not have a problem with .... + Informações

Beached Fin Whales, Raghly, Streedagh, Co. Sligo, Ireland : TopVideos.com.br Beached Fin Whales, Raghly, Streedagh, Co. Sligo, Ireland
5.45 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 236 exibições

Late November and early December 2011, Co. Sligo, Ireland, the bodies of two Fin Whales were found within days of each other. In both cases cause of death is unknown (at time of filming). Also unknown was whether or not they had died at sea before grounding onshore.* The first to be spotted was at Raghly believed to be a young male (perhaps a teenager). Coming ashore in the relative shelter of Raghly harbour his body was remarkably well preserved despite the strong winter storms and large waves bashing our shores that week. So intact that some locals oragnised a group to preserve the skeleton (Magherow Whale Group). The second, larger, adult male was reported a few days later near Streedagh. Locals reported that his body had been shore a day or two then was washed back out, then in again. When one looked at the rocks his body travelled over, and the strength of the seas that ime (a record 20.4m wave was recorded soon after in Co Donegal), it is no wonder that his head was so badly damaged and there were some deep scratches and gouges in his flesh. I guess when something this big dies, it brings home the fragility of our own lives and we tend to seek big explanations to help us cope. So I heard some around me theorising about nets, submarine or shipping sonar, chasing whaling ships, pollution and other human acts that might have been responsible. But I heard no one discussing what seems to be the simpler explanation for this rare double-beaching: ... whales die naturally .... + Informações
