Too High to Die is the eighth album by the Meat Puppets, released on January 25, 1994. This album sold very well due to the success of its single "Backwater", which reached #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album itself also reached #1 on the Heatseekers chart, making it one of the Meat Puppets' most successful albums. The album's title is a parody of The Ramones' 1984 album Too Tough to Die. "BACKWATERS" Synopsis A wealthy British couple, Andy, a writer, and Lili, a soap-opera star, get into a car accident, returning home from a big party at Lilis American step-brother, Jasons sprawling estate in the English countryside. The accident leaves the wife paralyzed below waist while the husband who was driving, miraculously escapes unhurt. Months of treatment and physical therapy don't improve Lilis condition. She is bitter and angry and holds her husband responsible for her condition. Consumed by guilt Andy takes her constant beratings quietly. The marriage is undergoing tremendous tension. The doctor suspects the paralysis to be psychosomatic; perhaps alternative medicine should be considered. Jason recommends that the couple go to KERALA on a vacation. He had gone there before to shoot a documentary for the Discovery Channel. He suggests that Kerala's Ayurvedic Herbal massages may heal her injury and a vacation together may heal their marriage. The couple arrives in Cochin and rent a houseboat on the backwaters. They hire a masseuse who starts the wife's herbal therapy treatment. While she undergoes her massage, the husband goes for long walks pondering his situation. During one such walk along the backwaters, he notices a very beautiful dusky woman bathing in a waterfall. This is Sara. He is unable to take his eyes off her, watches her with guilt. Next, he sees her as a dancer at a felicitation organized by the hotel to welcome his wife. Bessie Smith is the best-known of the female "classic blues" (or "city blues") singers from the 1910s and 1920s (others include Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, Clara Smith, and Mamie Smith). Known as the"Empress of the Blues," Bessie Smith's first recording, "Down-Hearted Blues," from 1923, was very successful, and helped her to become the leading African-American performer of the time. She performed in various minstrel and black vaudeville shows, and as her reputation and fame grew, she performed with many of the other leading early jazz musicians of her time: Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson, and James P. Johnson, just to name a few. Johnson was instrumental in the development of the piano style that emerged from Harlem in the 1920s known as "stride." In the age before sound amplification and microphones, a successful singer needed to be able to project. Smith's voice not only had this quality, it also possessed a rich timbre and tremendous emotive power. Her ability to use "blue notes" and other vocal embellishments, along with a loose melodic phrasing, became hallmarks of jazz and blues inflection that other musicians (singers and instrumentalists) emulated. In this recording of "Backwater Blues," we can hear these techniques at work, and they stand in contrast to the very structured twelve-bar blues form of the song. Previously map recced backwater location. Paddled east for mile and half after put in then took off shoot backwater trib. Paddled meandered for another mile on fast flowing backwater, moored up on bank for 15 mins. Set off before dark and paddled for another 2 miles ducking low tree bows and branches in some places no room to manouvre paddle so had to grip branch steer in places. Eventually got back onto Thames and paddled in near dark in circuit further 3 miles back to put in point.. + Informações
