He performs on the traditional east African stringed instrument, the nyatiti and is a highly accomplished djembe player. Ogada is one of the Luo people of Western Kenya. He was born in Mombasa. Ogada was approached and asked to play at Peter Gabriel's WOMAD festival. In 1993, he was invited to Gabriel's Realworld Studios, where he recorded his first album, En Mane Kuoyo (Just Sand). He continues to tour extensively with WOMAD. Ogada co-founded the African Heritage Band in 1979 and played kit drums, bass and percussion for many years before departing for London, England, where he initially occasionally busked London streets, singing accompianied by Nyatiti and leg rattle or ankle bells.. + Informações

La canción parte de una melodía tradicional Luo que se canta cuando se avecinan tormentas. En Kenya es poco común que llueva, y el agua es todo un acontecimiento. Entonces se canta esta canción que cuenta a los niños que la lluvia está por llegar y que se debe poner el ganado a resguardo para salvaguardar la riqueza familiar. Aprenden a través de la canción lo que se debe hacer, pues muchos todavía no han visto llover nunca y no saben lo que eso significa. En algunas formas de la tradición, el conocimiento se transmite de un modo subjetivo a través de la música. En sociedades con ausencia de escuelas, donde la educación se vive a través las familias y por transmisión oral, las canciones contienen pequeñas perlas de sabiduría que ayudan a los niños a comprender y aprender. Así, a partir de una experiencia física (acción) que se siente a través de una melodía y una letra (emoción), se comprende en profundidad lo sucedido (mente), produciéndose con ello un aprendizaje. La belleza de la música tradicional recae en su transmisión de valores sociales, educativos, y en su utilización pues muchas tonadas se usan para momentos cotidianos en el trabajo, la crianza y las relaciones. Ayub Ogada nació al abrigo de una familia perteneciente al pueblo Luo de Kenya. De su cultura aprendió a tocar el Nyatiti, una especie de lira de ocho cuerdas, y el Djembé, instrumento de percusión de mano muy común en el África negra. The song 'Obiero' is from the 1997 compilation album 'African Angels' by the Kenyan musician Ayub Ogada. He was born in Mombasa and is from the Luo ethnic group. Ayub is an accomplished player of the traditional east African stringed instrument, the nyatiti and djembe. In the mid 1980's he relocated to the UK where he played his traditional instruments on the streets busking for money. He was approached by Peter Gabriel and participated in one of the early WOMAD concerts.
