In the late Summer of 1947, Record Producer Art Satherly suggested Gene Autry record a new Christmas song he had discovered called, "An Old Fashioned Tree." For its flipside, Gene remembered a song idea he'd gotten while participating in the annual Hollywood "Santa Claus Lane" parade the previous November. Astride his horse, ahead of St. Nick on his sleigh, he'd heard a child on the sidewalk shout, "Here comes Santa Claus!" Satherly took Gene's idea to composer Oakley Haldeman, who operated Autry's music publishing division, and he came up with the melody. After its initial release, "Here Comes Santa Claus" became a perennial top-ten hit, selling almost two million copies by December of that year. Here is the classic Christmas song written by Gene Autry! I decided to do this today when I heard that Bob Dylan had just released a Christmas album! On checking it out I discovered that the first song on it was "Here Comes Santa Claus" and having wanted to do it myself since I used it in one of my students PowerPoint presentations when I taught school (and not wanting to be bested) I decided to do it myself! Havng received a lot of criticism for the way I looked when I sang, I decide to do a presentation of the music using film and pictures and to no show myself looking as terrible as I evidently do when I sing!
