As Auroras Boreal e Austral As auroras são tempestades magnéticas que ocorrem nas regiões polares. Na região do Pólo Norte ela é conhecida como Aurora Boreal, sendo Aurora a deusa romana da alvorada e Boreas, vento norte em grego. Na região do Pólo Sul ela é chamada de Aurora Austral, sendo que Australis quer dizer do Sul em latim. As Auroras Boreal e Austral ocorrem quando a Terra é atingida pelas partículas eletrostáticas emitidas pelo Sol em decorrência de suas reações termonucleares. Estas partículas, ou Vento Solar, são defletidas pelo campo magnético da Terra, a Magnetosfera. O vento solar flui em torno da magnetosfera de forma parecida como a água passa por uma pedra em um rio.
