"Cut is the branch that might have grown full straight" I became fascinated by Henry Wallis' painting "Chatterton" many years ago when I saw it reproduced on the cover of a book of poetry. To me it encapsulated exquisitely the Romantic vision of the starving, misunderstood artist alone in his garret room; it is unsurprising to discover it caused a small sensation in London when it was first unveiled at the Royal Academy in 1856. It wasn't until much more recently recently that I got to see the painting itself, hanging on a grey wall of the Tate Gallery; I was surprised by its relatively diminutive size compared with the other Pre-Raphaelite images that surrounded it, but also by its mesmeric intensity. It occurred to me then, five years ago, that his story might make a good play and, when I was given the opportunity for a sabbatical from Haberdashers' last term, I knew this would be my subject. The play that you are about to see is certainly not the one that I thought I was going to write. I believed it would be about how those unfortunate talented people, who 'live fast' and die tragically young, acquire almost iconic status after their deaths; about our current obsession with celebrity and the difficulties faced by those unable to cope with being plucked from obscurity and thrust suddenly into the spotlight. Rev.Jackson addressed the school on Politics and the facebook generation. Rev. Jackson touched on many issues affecting modern society in his talk, including the problem of gun and knife crime, drug use, and the history of the civil rights movement both in the USA and the UK. He also reminded Habs pupils that they are not the future, but that they are "the here and now", and that they have a duty to make the most of their educational opportunities, and to share their expertise with others. The talk was followed by a question and answer session before Rev.Jackson signed a few autographs and posed for photographs with Junior boys outside Aldenham House.
