Treasures of the Ashmolean - 28 minute documentary - trailer 5.27 min. | 4.55 avaliação | 26222 exibições Watch the full film here: vod.journeyman.tv For downloads and more information, visit: www.journeyman.tv The Ashmolean Museum at Oxford University is believed to be the oldest museum in the world. Started by father and son gardeners in the 17th century it has grown over the last three hundred years to become an internationally important museum of art and antiquity. The Ashmolean is not just one of the world's oldest museums, it's also one of the greatest, with collections of art and archaeology from all of the world's major cultures. This includes footage of the largest Minoan Greek art collection outside Greece and the greatest pre-dynastic Egyptian collection outside of Cairo. Get drawn into the bustling 'Hunt in the Forest' by Paul Uccello, with its 'vividly-coloured figures' and 'shouting, blowing horns' - one of the most magical pictures of the 15th century. Wonder at the shrine of Taharqa - a grand political statement, proclaiming to the world that he, Taharqa, had been chosen by the Gods to rule both Egypt and Nubia. Shrink with fear at the legend of the Minotaur and marvel at the Alfred Jewel - the last remaining artifact of the Anglo-Saxon King Alfred's glorious reign - heralding a new age of enlightenment and learning. A fascinatingly educative introduction into the glorious world of art history. Part of 'The Treasures of Britain' series. December 2008. + Informações |

The Pre-Raphaelites in Oxford: Ashmolean Museum - Paintings and Sculpture 9.33 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 683 exibições Most of the paintings we look at here are from the Combe Bequest. John Everett Millais first came to Oxford in 1846 to visit his half-brother, and met James Wyatt, a picture dealer who had a shop in the High Street. Wyatt commissioned paintings from Millais, and in 1850 he introduced him to Thomas Combe and his wife Martha, who had no children of their own, and virtually adopted him and his young friends, starting with Charles Alston Collins (1828-1873). They stayed at his house -- Millais even spent Christmas with them in 1850, which surprised his own family. In 1851 Holman Hunt spent Christmas there, and in turn became a kind of adopted son. The Combes bought important religious paintings, including Hunt's Light of the World which can be seen in the chapel of Keble College. Combe was known as "the Early Christian" and was a good friend of John Henry Newman. Works discussed: Charles Alston Collins, William Bennett (1850) John Everett Millais, Thomas Combe (1850) John Everett Millais, The Return of the Dove to the Ark (1851) William Holman Hunt, A Converted British Family Sheltering a Christian Missionary from the Persecution of the Druids (1850) Charles Alston Collins, Convent Thoughts (1851) Thomas Woolner, bust of Thomas Combe (1863) John William Inchbold, A Study, in March (1855) William Holman Hunt, The Festival of St Swithin (The Dovecot) (1866-75) www.history.brookes.ac.uk. + Informações |

Ashmolean Museum Creative Wayfinding 2.02 min. | 0 avaliação | 1149 exibições This clip is taken from 'Ashmolean Museum Creative Wayfinding', a programme now available from NBS Learning Channels www.thenbs.com The programme looks at the newly refurbished Ashmolean Museum which opens to the public in November 2009. The refurbishment includes a new extension which has doubled the museum's usable space but remains hidden behind the original neo-classical facade. Internally, it has radically changed the museum's appearance and how its exhibits are displayed. The separate, subject-specific rooms of the old museum have been replaced by open sided galleries, bridges and glazed displays, providing glimpses of distant objects in other areas of the museum. This is intended to improve visitor wayfinding and highlight connections between different civilizations, as part of the exhibition strategy, Crossing Cultures -- Crossing Time. This programme also outlines the museum's history, considering how the new structure integrates with the old, and explaining how layout and services have been arranged to create greater exhibition space.. + Informações |

I think I'll be going back to Oxford next year, if the finances allow, and maybe shoot at some Harry Potter film locations aswell.. + Informações |
