Art in Iraq Today, organized and curated by Dia Al-Azzawi, Solidere, Charles Pocock of Meem Gallery and Rula Alami Zaki, brings together the works of a group of Iraqi artists with varying working methodologies, whom are united in their experience of exile. One of the major aims of this project is to highlight the enduring talent of contemporary Iraqi artists despite the circumstances that have forced them to relocate to various parts of the globe. Seeing that the artists included in this exhibition spent their formative years in Iraq, and have been profoundly shaped by such experiences, their work carries within it, along with their experience of exile, traces of what contemporary art in Iraq might have been today. Art in Iraq Today should therefore be seen as more emblematic than literal in its message. The title also needs to be understood in the context of the project's inception, which is dedicated to the memory of pre-eminent art critic Jabra Ibrahim Jabra and his seminal essay about modern Iraqi art, titled 'Art in Iraq Today' (1961). The exhibition series and corresponding publication, Art in Iraq Today (published by Skira and Meem Editions, sponsored by Crescent Petroleum), marks the fiftieth anniversary of Jabra's scholarly contribution, which was initiated in a different era, when Iraq was a very different country. Techung, a Tibetan folk and freedom singer/songwriter living in exile in the San Francisco Bay Area, talks about his six-week artist-in-residency program at Emory involving the classroom and stage. He will be one of the featured artists at the Emory World Music Ensembles' Echoes of Asia concert on Sunday, April 17 (7 pm, Performing Arts Studio). His final on-campus performance will be a family-themed concert on Sunday, April 24 (4pm, Carlos Museum), where he will perform songs from his new CD, "Shemshae" ("heart songs"). Techung plays the dramyen (lute) and lingbu (flute), both traditional instruments, and will be performing Tibetan music for children. This concert is free and open to the public. Their willingness to exercise their democratic right was both historic and uncommon in the Middle East. A poem by the famous Albanian writer, poet, theologian, diplomat dedicated to Luigj Gurakuqi. Theofan (Fan) Stilian Noli (January 6, 1882 March 13, 1965) was an Albanian-American writer, scholar, diplomat, politician, and founder of the Albanian Orthodox Church, who served as prime minister and regent of Albania in 1924. Fan Noli is venerated in Albania as a champion of literature, history, theology, diplomacy, journalism, music and national unity. He played an important role in the consolidation of Demotic Greek as the national language of Greece with numerous translations of world literature masterpieces. His contribution to the English-language literature are also manifold: as a scholar and author of a series of publications on Scanderbeg, Shakespeare, Beethoven, religious texts and translations. He acquired his education at Harvard and was ordained priest in 1908, establishing thereby the Albanian Church and elevating the Albanian language to ecclesiastic use. He briefly resided in Albania after the 1912 declaration of independence. After World War I, Noli led the diplomatic efforts for the reunification of Albania and received the support of US President Wilson.
