"Deep Purple" was first composed as a piano number by Peter DeRose in 1933, and when the sheet music became very popular Mitchell Parrish added lyrics to the song in 1938. It was first popularly recorded by Larry Clinton & His Orchestra with Bea Wain doing the vocal in 1939, and has since been recorded by many including this version by Nino Tempo and his sister April Stevens. Original Billboard review: "Rene creates a lovely setting for a sexy vocal go by the promising April Stevens on this Cole Porter oldie. Formed in the early 1960s when Nino Tempo and April Stevens signed as a duo with Atco Records, the group had a string of Billboard hits and earned a Grammy Award as "best rock & roll record of the year" for the single "Deep Purple". "Deep Purple" was originally released as a "B-side" by producer Ahmet Ertegun, who was dubious of Tempo's belief that it would be a hit, calling it "the most embarrassing thing" the duo had ever recorded. When the "A-side" song, "Paradise", flopped, Ertegun relented, and the song achieved notability as the longest running hit B-side, a title it carried for 21 years. Music journalist Richie Unterberger has described the later song "All Strung Out" as Nino Tempo & April Stevens' "greatest triumph", declaring it "one of the greatest Phil Spector-inspired productions of all time". For years following their charting singles, the duo continued recording, but failed to achieve continued sales success. However in March 1973 the duo scored a #5-hit in the Netherlands with "Love Story" on A & M Records, two years after Andy Williams took that same song to #13 in the Dutch Top 40. This is Nino & April's re-recorded version of "Feelin' Kinda Sunday"...a song which was recently heard on a State Farm Insurance ad which was nationally broadcast during USA sporting events. The song was also recorded by Frank & Nancy Sinatra as their follow-up to "Somethin' Stupid." It is Frank & Nancy's version that was heard on the State Farm ad. Composer Annette Tucker remembers that all three writers (she, Nino, and Kathy Wakefield) were singing on the original demo having a wonderful time thinking up all the different parts. At the time, Annette and Kathy were under contract to Don Costa. Neil Diamond happened to come by one time while Annette was playing and singing the song, and he loved it. Nancy Sinatra heard the great demo they did (produced by Nino) and took it to her father. Frank did not particularly like the song, and did not want to record it. He did it in one take. Per Annette: "It did get on the easy listening chart, and 40 years later, State Farm picked it up and did the commercial which we are all thrilled about. It is getting great reaction from the fans and lots of posts.
