Please click "show more" to read the poem. "Another Wasted Weekend with the Anxiety of Influence" I It died last night (my favorite pen) And now the blue pills aren't working If they ever did. I'll wake up too early tomorrow and Not go running. For now I'm putting on Hamlet And wishing I knew Yorick. II I wake up, She leaves, The mattress reads: "notice: this mattress is designed to resist combustion which may result from a smoldering cigarette." III In Milton's meter I decide to write Some verse for her, but then I remember That she cannot stand anymore iambs. For her, pentameter generally lost Its touch after a dose of Prince Hamlet's Circled soliloquies, and though I think I could offer something a little more Direct and less verbose and less wordy And stronger in intention I decide To play it safe and not write anything. We write illusions, and we have too many. IV By lunchtime I'm eating breakfast. Lay on the linoleum tile With me And we will catch tigers. Can I promise you the tigers? V A storm, a strike, a flight, a fire, And yet nothing but a weekend gone? No, my mind, I must be wrong; We can't let fear suppress a song. Is it wrong to hate a child For clinging to its mother's breast? Is it traumatic stress disorder If you like traumatic stress? No, my soul, it does not sound right, But human hands can unseat the Christ. VI I do not need the blue pills, And I do not sleep poorly, For I suffer incessant dreams. ----------------------------------------- © 2010 Johnny .... + Informações

Marilyn O'Neil: Founder/CEO, Nautilus Environmental The first one that comes to mind is a little bit counter-intuitive for me, because I have done a lot of things without doing this, but it's to pause on the verge of big choices or decisions, or even little choices, to think about, just a few questions to ask yourself. "Have you considered all of your options? Do you know what all of your options are? Do you know anyone who's been through the same kind of thing that can give you some advice? Are you making a choice out of fear? Are you moving away from something or are you moving toward it?" And just give yourself a moment. My career has taken big leaps both ways, but in retrospect, it's been a value to stop and think some of those times about all the options I had on the table that were available to me. Every day I learn those lessons, every day. Even as much as just, saying an immediate response to someone that asks you a question without pausing to think about what you could say. Are you getting closer to what you want or are you getting further away when you respond, when you make a choice even about how you interact. So...I...even in my own office, how you interact with people, it's just good to have a pause button somewhere in your brain, where you stop and take a moment. But yeah, I learned that lesson, I'm still learning that lesson. Repeatedly. I pause to make sure that I'm going for the right things. I've made very big leaps and usually there is a series of .... + Informações

Buy DVD at www.mediaed.org The Mean World Syndrome Media Violence & the Cultivation of Fear A new film based on the late George Gerbner's groundbreaking analysis of media influence and media violence. Featuring George Gerbner and Michael Morgan For years, debates have raged among scholars, politicians, and concerned parents about the effects of media violence on viewers. Too often these debates have descended into simplistic battles between those who claim that media messages directly cause violence and those who argue that activists exaggerate the impact of media exposure altogether. The Mean World Syndrome, based on the groundbreaking work of media scholar George Gerbner, urges us to think about media effects in more nuanced ways. Ranging from Hollywood movies and prime-time dramas to reality programming and the local news, the film examines how media violence forms a pervasive cultural environment that cultivates in heavy viewers, especially, a heightened state of insecurity, exaggerated perceptions of risk and danger, and a fear-driven propensity for hard-line political solutions to social problems. A provocative and accessible introduction to cultivation analysis, media effects research, and the subject of media influence and media violence more generally. Also includes three additional short features -- ideal for classroom use -- that take a closer look at Gerbner's analysis and the Mean World Syndrome. 1. This is an incredible prog song from the Belgian band MINDGAMES from the album Actors in Play [2006]. the guitarist's solo is AMAZING!!!!!! all this thanx ti mitsos who introduced me to them.. Influences are to be found in the whole progressive rock history. Element of FLOYD, YES, GENESIS, MARILLION and too many others to mention can be found in here. The band grouped in 1997 but it took 2 years until they entered the recording studio to shape their first recording demos. The rehearsals for their debut album took the next three years until the album was ready, in 2002, and was finally released in 2003. This output was carefully structured with mid-long pieces and three epics. It's a very sophisticated music, precisely played and perfect balance between energy and softness. Strong melodies, multiple rhythm changes and a nice instrumental colouring of the songs are warp and woof on "International Daylight", an album that achieved a great success among the lovers of Symphonic Progressive. In 2005, MINDGAMES returned to studio to prepare their second album, "Actor In A Play", released in 2006 that received very positive reviews from the international press and fans. With this album, MINDGAMES keep following the same path from their beginning, a well-balanced sound between Neo and New Symphonic, blended with several other influences. for fans of progressive music is an unknown treat.. + Informações

Anxiety - Ravi Shankar - Transmigration Macabre (3 of 9) : TopVideos.com.br Anxiety - Ravi Shankar - Transmigration Macabre (3 of 9)
7.42 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 1184 exibições

Transmigration Macabre was composed by Ravi Shankar for the British art film Viola, which tells of the growth and eventual victory of a possessed man's belief that his dead wife has returned to life in the form of a cat that pursues him. The music traces his emotional turmoil as the man, dominated by his wife during her lifetime, struggles against her baneful influence after her death. It's hard to tell how successful the score functioned without access to this obscure film, but on its own terms, it's decently haunting Indian music. Perhaps it's more subdued and, at times, more disquieting than Shankar's usual approach, reflecting song titles such as "Anxiety," "Madness," and "Torment." The percussion and rhythm in those numbers gets rapid and tense, though that's not at odds with how passages in Indian classical sometimes accelerate and build in tempo. This is balanced by gentler numbers, again complementing the mood of the song titles ("Submission," "Reflection," "Fantasy"), though ominous undercurrents remain even in some of the quieter moments. [See for Miles issued the LP in 1973.] ~ Richie Unterberger. + Informações

Speakers: Cia Durante; Andrew Gowers; Tania Spriggens; Sandy Starr Chair: Shirley Dent 'Does your work getting ripped off make your blood boil?' The Design and Artists Copyright Society's question is a stark reminder that while digital technology makes it increasingly easy for artists to create and publish work, bypassing traditional routes to get 'straight to the audience', it also makes it easier for others to cut, paste and plagiarise that work. The Gowers Review of Intellectual Property notes that copyright 'suffers from a marked lack of public legitimacy' today. For the visual arts this problem has been heightened by digital applications, from Paint Shop Pro to Photoshop, promising to make Picassos of us all. How do we judge what is original and excellent when work is freed up from the traditional institutions of the art gallery or the photo agency, and images are widely available online for all to use, whether simply by copying them, or by adapting and using them in 'original' work? The Gowers Review argues that by ensuring artists are rewarded, copyright 'incentivises' creativity. But might copyright sometimes act as a curb on creativity, stifling new ways of working in the 'creative commons'? Arguably, the problem is not all that new. Harold Bloom's 'anxiety of influence' thesis holds that authors and artists are always striving for originality against a backdrop of great works and past masters. What does today's copyright debate tell us about artists .... + Informações

A Google Tech Talk May 5, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Michael Goard, PhD, and Emily Jacobs, PhD. The majority of the human brain is comprised of a single structure, the neocortex, responsible for a range of cognitive functions, from sensory perception to abstract thought. However, despite this diversity of functions, the neocortex has a simple architecture it is comprised of numerous repeated motifs of a single stereotyped neural circuit. This talk will serve as an introduction to the structure and function of the neocortical circuit, particularly focusing on how it processes sensory input in order to generate cohesive perception of the external world. This will be followed by a description of recent experiments demonstrating how the neocortex can process sensory input in different ways depending on the behavioral state of the animal. Finally, there will be a discussion of how understanding neocortical function will lead to innovations in medicine, computing, and artificial intelligence. The study of neuroscience is devoted to understanding how the brain functions uniformly across members of a species, but a critical question centers on how cognitive processes differ between members of a species, or in an individual under varying environmental conditions. In short, why do some people excel where others falter? This talk introduces two factors that contribute to individual differences in cognition: genes and hormones. This concept is examined through recent experiments .... + Informações

Pierre Boulez - Piano Sonata No. 1 : TopVideos.com.br Pierre Boulez - Piano Sonata No. 1

Piano Sonata No. 1 (1946) I. Lent -- Beaucoup plus allant II. Assez large -- Rapide Idil Biret, piano Pierre Boulez composed his First Piano Sonata in 1946. The Piano sonata was not as common to the first half of the twentieth century as it was to the nineteenth, and Boulez rarely wrote in a genre that had already been well explored. After Beethoven left behind his legacy of thirty-two sonatas, the most interesting developments have not been in the sonata style. This trend in avoiding territories evincing daunting musical genius has been called "the anxiety of influence," denoting why many composers would steer clear of the sonata genre after Beethoven. It is difficult to hear a sonata without Beethoven coming to mind, and it is equally difficult to avoid making a comparison to Beethoven under those circumstances. That being the case, the great piano works of composers such as Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, and others centered on sets of variations, fantasies, and other structures that did not immediately bring to mind the foreboding Beethoven Comparison. This angst did not seem to grasp Boulez. While history has welcomed him into the Western canon for his lasting contributions to music, he seems to have always known that his place was among the great names. While other composers may have written one or two sonatas after maturing as artists and then finally, painfully producing them in a heightened state of anxiety, Boulez wrote, published, and relentlessly promoted his .... + Informações
