To build on the popularity of her "Asmara" and "Bengawan Solo" in South East Asia in the early 60's, Anneke took the same musical arrangement and recorded "Oh Malaya." 1963 saw the creation of a new country called Malaysia, made up of formerly British-governed Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah. "Oh Malaya" was quickly changed to "Oh Malaysia," and this song helped to foster the new and growing national pride of the new Malaysians. (This video was taken in 2000.) Haar vader, de Haagse sergeant-majoor Grönloh, is dan al in een krijgsgevangenenkamp opgesloten. Van de Japanse bezetters krijgt het kind de naam 'Yokkot-jang', wat 'klein zusje' betekent. Anneke brengt haar jeugd door in jappenkampen, waar haar moeder een belangrijke rol vervult in het hooghouden van het moreel onder de vrouwen en kinderen. Als haar vader na de oorlog thuiskomt, kan hij meteen Anneke's eerste optreden beleven. Voor de Nederlandse militairen zingt zij de kinderliedjes die ze van haar moeder leerde. Chocolade en pinda's zijn haar gage. In 1949 komt het gezin naar Nederland, waar uiteindelijk in Eindhoven een vaste stek wordt gevonden. Op school is Anneke actief bezig met cabaret. De Belgische impresario Jos de Mol biedt haar een contract aan. Op zestienjarige leeftijd treedt zij weer op voor militairen, maar nu in Duitsland en België. Haar artiestennaam is ook dan nog 'Yokkot-jang', maar haar gage bedraagt nu 25 gulden; een aanzienlijk bedrag in die dagen. It means that Anneke Gronloh was a dutch who was survived under war surveillance. Gronloh spent her early years in the Japanese occupied the Dutch East Indies in a Japanese concentration camp. Her father, a soldier, had been interned for her birth (Wikipedia). After the war, the family moved to the Netherlands, Anneke grew up in Eindhoven.
