I happened upon Anne Briggs via this song and 'Black Waterside', as guitarist Jimmy Page had adapted these songs and done guitar versions (White Summer and Black Mountain Side respectively), and was influenced by her and others such as Bert Jansch and Davey Graham. This song is like many of her songs, it is sung unaccompanied. Anne Briggs was 19 when she sang this at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963, where it was recorded and subsequently released on various albums. The following is adapted from John Dougan of All Music Guide: Anne Briggs was a singer of traditional English folk music, possessing as beautiful a voice as one could hope to have. She was the single most important influence on a group of female British folk singers including Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior, June Tabor, and Linda Thompson. Even Norma Waterson, herself a hugely important figure in the British folk revival of the mid-'60s, admits to being influenced by Briggs' singing and notes that Anne Briggs singlehandedly changed the way that English women folk singers sang. What makes this story so odd is that Anne Briggs' entire recorded output consists of about 30 songs. She stopped singing at the age of 27, supposedly because she hated the sound of her recorded voice. As folk music became electrified and increasingly popular and bands such as Fairport Convention and Pentangle were reinventing the British folk tradition, and more and more women (Sandy Denny et al) were singing in a style started by Anne Briggs .... + Informações

Look out for the CD 'Anne Briggs - A Collection' on Topic. Sadley, Anne no longer sings live. In the 60's and 70's she gained legendary status not just for her singing but also for her life style. She was a sort of new age traveller twenty years before the battle of the bean field. Her performing career was ephemeral and from where I am standing it looks like she chose travelling and life over a career in the music business. She often travelled in the company of many of the great artists of her day such as Bert Jansch, The Watersons and Johnny Moynihan. She now lives on an island off the coast of Scotland and pops up in the odd BBC Four documentary. The video footage was shot in the Big Freeze of January 2010, when the whole of the British Isles experienced the coldest Winter in thirty years. The beeswing herself recorded little in her brief career, preferring to sing live in whatever pub or small club she found herself in before turning her back on it all. Wherever she is now I would love to hear her sing again in public. This mysterious song was written by Lal Waterson of the Waterson's and was originally included on Lal & Mike's wonderful Bright Phoebus album. This weaving mill song was sung by Anne Briggs with Ray Fisher joining in on chorus on the theme album The Iron Muse: A Panorama of Industrial Folk Music. This recording was also included in her two compilations Classic Anne Briggs and A Collection. The Doffing Mistress is originally an Ulster song which Anne Briggs used to sing in the 1960. She said that "doffers" were the women who took the finished cloth from off the machines for the next stage in its production. It was work that was largely done bent double, which explains the line "she hangs her coat on the highest pin." The Doffing Mistress was the supervisor, and, in consequence, never did the job itself. The upshot of this was that she could stand up straight, something which doffers, bent double as they were all their working lives, found difficult to do. AL Lloyd wrote in the original album's sleeve notes: "Perhaps because the words are at once good-natured to fellow-workers and cheeky to the master, The Doffing Mistress has a firm hold on the imagination of young mill girls. It seems to have originated in the linen-mills of Northern Ireland but has since spread to textile workers elsewhere. The form easily allows for improvised words and many local verses are attached to the tune. A "doffer" is a worker who takes the full bobbins off the spinning machines. The Doffing Mistress oversaw the young factory girls in the spinning sheds as the changed (doffed) the bobbins, ready to be sent to the weavers. The .... + Informações
