Today we're in the Bloomingdale Neighborhood of Manheim Township, an established suburban community in Lancaster County, PA with established landscaping everywhere you look. I "get down and dirty" with Andrew Landis of Showcase Landscape Services to discuss planting now, in late fall, for spring color. Andrew brought along a bag of Tulip bulbs and the preferred hand tools for planting them. He talked about how to organize your plantings by color, type and locations within your yard. Since we're having an unseasonably warm late fall, it's still possible to get out there and do some digging while the temps are over 50 degrees. Andrew mentioned that you can get many bulbs planted in a half hour, so it's not a big time commitment. Today we're out and about in Lampeter, near Lancaster with Andrew Landis of Showcase Group Landscaping of Lancaster (www.showcasegroup.biz). We're talking about early Spring landscaping priorities - something Andrew is currently working with his clients on. Here are a few highlights 1) Cleanup - Pick up the sticks and leaves left from the winter and get them out of your yards and beds. Use a spade or shovel to "clean cut" at least 3-4 inches around beds to cut the grass roots growing under. 2) Maintain - Be sure to put down a layer of mulch in the beds, 3-4 inches of mulch will be key to help keep down the weeds during the growing season in June. Use a mulch of your choice - remember that finer grade mulches tend to turn to soil quicker. If you're a chemical person, put down a "pre-emergent" herbicide to kill the weeds before they germinate in the beds. 3) Feed - Just as a healthy body needs good food, your plantings need to be rejuvenated with nutrients they've missed all winter under the snow. Use the appropriate fertilizer for the different types of plants, either acidic or not so much.
