The Dogon are an ethnic group located mainly in the administrative districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in Mali, West Africa. The precise origin of the Dogon, like those of many other ancient cultures, is undetermined. Their civilization emerged, in much the same manner as ancient Sumer, both sharing tales of their creation by gods who came from the sky in space ships, who allegedly will return one day. The early histories are informed by oral traditions that differ according to the Dogon clan being consulted and archaeological excavation much more of which needs to be conducted. Because of these inexact and incomplete sources, there are a number of different versions of the Dogon's origin myths as well as differing accounts of how they got from their ancestral homelands to the Bandiagara region. The people call themselves 'Dogon' or 'Dogom', but in the older literature they are most often called 'Habe', a Fulbe word meaning 'stranger' or 'pagan'. Certain theories suggest the tribe to be of ancient Egyptian descent - the Dogon next migrating to the region now called Libya, then moving on to somewhere in the regions of Guinea or Mauritania. Around 1490 AD, fleeing invaders and/or drought, they migrated to the Bandiagara cliffs of central Mali. Carbon-14 dating techniques used on excavated remains found in the cliffs indicate that there were inhabitants in the region before the arrival of the Dogon. " I wrote this book so that young students of poetry may understand that which has been hidden in letters." (Snorri Sturlusson, 1225 AD, introducing his Prose Edda) Snorri (1179-1241) wrote his Prose Edda in an attempt to preserve the Norse art of poetry, realizing that people no longer understood old poems (bardic poems and edda poems) because they were forgetting the pagan myths and thus the meaning behind the art of metaphorical allusion. At the same time he cleverly preserved ancient myths in a way that was inoffensive to the Church . The Poetic Edda on the other hand had to be hidden away from the authorities for many centuries, being too pagan to be acceptable. Snorri edited out of each myth everything that could be a threat to the Church´s monopole on salvation and resurrection of the soul in order to make the myths acceptable, and at the same time he provided keys to understand the myths of the Poetic Edda when that manuscript one day finally surfaced from oblivion. Poetic Edda: A collection of pagan, mythological Norse poems about gods and heroes that were written down some time after the conversion on Iceland in 1000 AD, dissapeared but copied. The surviving copy is the manuscript known as the Codex Regius, written down some time during the 12th century AD, and a few sheets from another lost copy which adds to or offer alternatives to the poems of the Edda. (Tacitus, Germania, 9) The Roman historian Tacitus, who wrote about the barbarian German tribes around the year 80 AD, claimed that "the Suebi make sacrifice to Isis." The Suebi was an alliance of tribes such as the Langobards, the Chatti, the Tencteri, the Semnones - a cluster of tribes that during the 1st century AD dominated what today is known as central Germany and Denmark. When describing the religions of other people, it was a Roman custom to translate the names of foreign gods to their Roman equivalents, as the Roman believed everybody worshipped the same gods only by different names. They based their translations on the particulars of the cult and the attributes of the deity. This way, Odin became Mercury, Tyr became Mars, and Thor became Jupiter. Most historians, thus, believe (I think justly) that when Tacitus translated the widely worshipped German goddess into Isis, he really meant Nehalennia, and that he used Isis to translate because like Isis, Nehalennia steers a ship. I discuss why I think the ship-argument is too simple. In 1867, the Norwegian authority on Old Norse literature, Sophus Bugge, dismissed the Raven Charm of Odin as a hoax and decided that it should never again be published as a part of the Poetic Edda. He based his decision on his belief that the Edda poems were representative of simple folklore, a category into which the Raven Charm did not fit. Also, he confessed, as many before him, that it was impossible to decipher this poem. All the Edda poems are metaphorical and allusive, giving away just a tip of an enormous narrative iceberg. But at least it is usually possible to recognize a narrative, and thanks to Snorri Sturlusson, who in 1225 wrote an explanation of the metaphors known as The Prose Edda, most of the Edda poems may be understood. Not so with the Raven Charm, and Snorri never even mentioned this poem. However, I believe that Snorri consciously left out of his explanation poems and parts of poems that were simply too seething with paganism to be acceptable in his time, and that could, in any way, reveal the true spiritual depths of the pagan lore and thus be a threat to the Christian faith. The hanging and self-sacrifice of Odin, a narrative that actually makes up the climax of the Hávamál poem, is not mentioned by Snorri at all, although he often quotes other parts of that poem. The story of Gunnlöd offering the precious mead is reduced by Snorri from being a story of sacred marriage and a stately goddess offering the drink from a golden throne, to being a story .... + Informações
