SPRING VALLEY - An elderly pedestrian was walking on the highway when he was struck by an unsuspecting motorist. The driver was unable to stop in time. The pedestrian was struck at highway-speeds and thrown through the windshield of the car, crunching in the roof and coming to rest in the passenger seat. The horrified driver continued to his home where he was able to call 911. The pedestrians legs were amputated during the collison below the knee and were found on the side of the highway. The driver was not expected to be facing charges at the time because alcohol and speed did not appear to be a factor. The pedestrian was at fault. The pedestrian may have been drinking and been unaware of his location, while stumbling up an on-ramp to the highway.. + Informações

In a November 2009 interview, she estimated that she weighed about 21 stone (294 lb or 133 kg): 6 stone (84 lb or 38 kg) for her upper body and the remainder in her legs and feet (210 lb or 95 kg).[2] Doctors were unable to provide a diagnosis for many years, until some doctors decided on Proteus syndrome in May 2006, though Sellar's condition is atypical in many respects. The most famous person with Proteus syndrome may be Joseph Merrick, the "Elephant Man". There is no known cure, When she was born, doctors were unsure if she would survive very long. However, she was walking at about 18 months. When it was recommended to her mother June that the then seven-year-old have her legs amputated, June refused in order to provide as normal a life as possible for her child. At 19, Mandy Sellars moved out to live on her own. She obtained a B.Sc. in psychology from the University of Central Lancashire, and succeeded in maintaining an independent lifestyle as an adult, with no live-in helpers. She gets around using crutches or a wheelchair, and has a specially modified hand-controlled car. When she was 28, she suffered a deep vein thrombosis, which left her paralyzed from the waist down for about six or eight weeks. Afterward, she had to learn to walk again. A paver who accidently severed his thumb off proudly showed how it has been replaced - with his BIG TOE. Grateful James Byne, 29, cut off his left thumb as he was sawing through a piece of wood last December. Surgeons desperately tried to sew it back on but the blood would not start flowing again despite months of treatment including using leeches. The father-of-one thought he would be left without his crucial digit - until doctors suggested fitting his left TOE to his hand instead. SINGAPORE: A minimally invasive surgery method is helping more diabetic patients save their legs from being amputated. Known as a Drug Eluting Balloon, it is coated with a drug similar to those used in chemotherapy but in very low doses. The process involves the insertion of a drug coated balloon into the blood vessels of their legs to widen the narrowed blood vessels while the drugs help delay scarring and the re-narrowing of blood vessels. The arteries of 75 per cent of the patients remained open for more than three months. Changi General Hospital vascular surgeon Dr Steven Kum explained: "We have a high proportion of Singaporeans between the age of 18 and 69 who are diabetic. In my opinion, this is a great burden for our health care system and this is only expected to increase. We are amongst the highest incidence and prevalence of diabetes in this region and we know if you have diabetes, with time, you'll get narrowed arteries in the leg and coupled with infection and there's a high chance of you getting an ulcer in the leg. Once you have an ulcer in the leg which doesn't heal, with insufficient blood supply, it's extremely high risk for having an amputation. "An amputation has got a significant impact not only to the patient, in the sense that the patient will be wheel chair bound. Only half of all our amputees end up walking. The cost and burden to society are enormous." Fifty patients at Changi General Hospital have undergone the procedure since it was introduced .... + Informações

An Austrian man has voluntarily had his hand amputated so he can be fitted with a bionic hand, which will be controlled by nerve signals in his own arm. The bionic hands, manufactured by the German prosthetics company Otto Bock, can pinch and grasp in response to signals from the brain. The wrist of the prosthesis can be rotated manually using the patient's other functioning hand. The patient will control the hand using the same brain signals that previously powered similar movements in the real hand and that will now be picked up by two sensors placed over the skin above nerves in the forearm.
