In this video, I make some hydrogen using drain cleaner (sodium hydroxide) and aluminium. To do this experiment, you will need Safety goggles/ face protection and gloves (WARNING sodium hydroxide causes severe burns and can cost you your eyesight) Something cheap made of aluminium you do not want, eg a pie dish (Containers which are made of aluminium often have an 'alu' sign on which I pointed out in the video) Sodium hydroxide (sourced from drain cleaner) Water A glass jar or container which is not made of lead zinc or aluminium Scissors Method: Dissolve sodium hydroxide in water. This evolves alot of heat, beware! Always add sodium hydroxide to water. Then add aluminium pieces to the concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. (You should start to see bubbles around the aluminium pieces) The reaction is slow to start off with, but the reaction between aluminium and sodium hydroxide is quite exothermic and the reaction speeds up significantly as the environment gets hotter. Soon lots of hydrogen is evolved which, you can set fire to (be careful, this can be a fire risk) or just marvel at. The reason why this experiment happens is because aluminium is 'amphoteric' and acts as both an acid and base, so the aluminium reacts with the sodium hydroxide in an acid/base reaction. Aluminium oxides and hydroxides also happen to be amphoteric, and therefore react with the sodium hydroxide, preventing the formation of a protective layer.. + Informações
