Msgr. Walter Rossi Rector, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Here in Rome for example, you see a lot of history, you see a lot of art, and it's very tangible. Music is something that you don't see but you have to hear. And unless there are festivals such as this, plus there are concerts that people are invited to and they're a part of, the musical component of history is not promoted. The choir did two performances, the first during a mass at St. Peter's Basilica celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Comastri. The second was a performance in honor of the Immaculate Conception at the Basilica of St. Mary Major. But neither of these was the most important performance of the year, since they sang during the vespers when the Pope visited Washington. Chen Yi's mixed choral work "Distance can't keep us two apart" was commissioned by the American Choral Directors Association Endowment in memory of Raymond W. Brook. In the collegial spirit of this work, it was premiered by seven choirs at ACDA division conferences throughout the country. Based on an old Ukrainian folk song, the original lyrics describe a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the plentiful year that the family will have. The song's title is derived from the Ukrainian word "shchedryi" which means "bountiful." The swallow is a herald of spring coming, possibly of pre-Christian origins. The folk melody was sung in many Ukrainian villages on Jan. 13 New Year's Eve on the Julian calendar usually by adolescent girls going house to house in celebration of the new year. Ola Gjeilo's Contrition is sung the by CWU Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director). Written for 8 part unaccompanied choir and soprano soloist by composer Ola Gjeilo, the piece is not yet published (as of July, 2011). The composer was in attendance at its US premiere, where the choir was featured at the Northwest American Choral Directors Association 2010 Conference held in Seattle, Washington Three more of Ola's pieces can be found in a four-video series called "In the Moment":in which he collaborates with the CWU Chamber Choir. In it, Ola creates an improvised accompaniment for 2 of the pieces (his setting of the "Ubi Caritas" text and on "Northern Lights"), and accompanies the choir on the 3rd ("The Ground").
