In his own words (1992): "Music on a Long Thin Wire is constructed as follows: the wire is extended across a large room, clamped to tables at both ends. The ends of the wire are connected to the loudspeaker terminals of a power amplifier placed under one of the tables. A sine wave oscillator is connected to the amplifier. A magnet straddles the wire at one end. Wooden bridges are inserted under the wire at both ends to which contact microphones are imbedded, routed to the stereo sound system. The microphones pick up the vibrations that the wire imparts to the bridges and are sent through the playback system. By varying the frequency and loudness of the oscillator, a rich variety of slides, frequency shifts, audible beats and other sonic phenomena may be produced." However, Lucier admits a long thin wire is only used to impress, a short thin wire would have worked as well if not better, and he discovered that the best way to produce variation in the sonic phenomena was to pick a setting and leave the setup alone. I filmed my last performance in October, however, the technical challenges of playing and recording in addition to getting the amplification right were too great. So I restaged a recording in the chapel at Loyola High School, Los Angeles, where I teach. A few words of unsolicited advice for others wanting to play this piece: I spent quite a bit of time experimenting with different speaker/teapot combinations to find a pair that best expressed the harmonics. As a general rule, I found that the rounder teapots worked best, but they tend to have small lids, making it difficult to get the speaker inside. I used Blu-Tak to affix the speaker to the bottom of the pot. For this particular pot, the spout was too small to get the plug through, as well. So I had to cut the wire, thread the line through the teapot, then reattach it to another line. I have tried several different mics to amplify the pot, too. Generally, small diaphragm condensers work best. I had many problems, however, with feedback. For this video, I used a Shure SM58 directly into a powered JBL speaker. The very good off axis rejection of this mic eliminates feedback, but it is not very sensitive. For the recording, I placed a portable Sony recorder close-by and mixed it into the soundtrack as best I could with iMovie. I will be .... + Informações

It can be blocked by visual attention with the eyes open or mental activity with the eyes closed. No part of the motor system is involved in any way. Control of the alpha consists simply of alteration of thought content - for example, ashifting back and forth from a state of visual imagery to one of relaxed resting. Place an EEG scalp electrode on each hemisphere of the occipital, frontal, or other appropriate region of the performer's head. Attach a reference electrode to an ear, finger, or other region suitable for cutting down electrical noise. [excerpt] Hildegard Kleeb, piano Roland Dahinden, trombone The Arditti Quartet Alvin Lucier (b. 1931) has been a pioneer in many areas of music composition and performance, including the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes. His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which - by means of close tunings with pure tones - sound waves are caused to spin through space. In Small Waves (1997), six glass vessels, some partially filled with water, are mounted on pedestals scattered around the performance space. Microphones are inserted into the mouths of the vessels, then routed through compressor-limiters to amplifiers and monitor speakers. During the course of the performance, the volume levels of the amplifiers are raised and lowered, causing feedback at pitches determined by the size and shape of the containers and their proximity to the loudspeakers. Following a sequence notated in the score, the players closely tune with the feedback strands causing interference patterns. At times, two water pourers empty water from one container to another, raising and lowering the pitches of the sounds from those containers. Music on a Long Thin Wire (composed in 1977) is a sound installation for audio oscillator and electronic monochord. A 50(?) foot length of wire was strung across a section of the church and activated by an amplified oscillator and magnets on either end, producing changing overtones and sounds. The wave of the tone created was changing quite subtley during the performance and as we moved around the cavernous space of Saint Merry the quality of the sounds changed further. The performance was held at Saint-Merry in Beauborg, Paris on the evening of May 2nd, 2009. This video is only a brief excerpt of the performance.. + Informações
