Song written by Florence Reece in 1931. She was the wife of Sam Reece, a union organizer for the United Mine Workers in Harlan County, Kentucky. In 1931, the miners of that region were locked in a bitter and violent struggle with the mine owners. In an attempt to intimidate the Reece family, Sheriff JH Blair and his men (hired by the mining company) illegally entered the Reece family home in search of Sam Reece. Sam had been warned in advance and escaped, but Florence and their children were terrorized in his place. Born in Manhattan, May 3 1919, to a family into social activism, literature and ethnography, this young radical split tenor (between alto and tenor) folk musician worked for the Library of Congresss Archive of American Folk Song until he created the Almanac Singers with political folk singers like Woody Guthrie and Lee Hays, a Democrats-Socialists-Communists Popular Front group. Seeger followed the CPUSs particular communism (mix of Benjamin Franklins, Jeffersons, Thomas Paynes and Lincolns ideals, American nationalism, social progressivism and conservative agrarianism) and his own freethinking (he admitted that "if () communism had caught up with this country, I would have been one of the first people thrown in jail"). Despite the Popular Front there was tension with president Franklin Delano Roosevelt for his embargos to Republican Spain, until the war forced reconciliation (Seeger served in the Pacific Front). After the war he continued the Almanac Singers work with The Weavers band and his The People's Songs organization. His People's Songs supported Henry A. Wallace's 1948 third party campaign: Wallace only won New York State for his "red" connections. In 1949 he left the CP over "Stalin's failure" (latter criticizing it in Big Joe Blues). After the hiring of The Weavers for a TV cigarette commercial in mid-1957, he spent his last contract year with band like a prisoner, due to opposition to tobacco selling and commercialism.
