Here is a great version of "Old Man River" performed by Al Hibbler with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. This was recorded from an old 16" radio transcription from 1951, the "STARS ON PARADE" program produced for the US Army and Air Force recruiting service. I'm not sure if this recording was made specifically for this program, but I haven't found another take exactly like this one, so it could be unique to this radio show. Al Hibbler (August 16, 1915- April 24, 2001 was an American vocalist with several pop hits. He is best known for his million selling recording of "Unchained Melody" (1955). Once described by Duke Ellington as "our major asset", the bandleader was referring to Hibbler's deep-toned, dramatic vocal style, with its heavy vibrato... "You could drive a truck through that vibrato," said one musician... which brought Hibbler and the band considerable popular acclaim.[2] He achieved national prominence in the United States with the Ellington orchestra in the mid 1940s, and went on to build a substantial career, which included continuing involvement with jazz musicians. Carney started off in Ellington's band playing alto, but soon switched to the baritone. His strong, steady saxophone often serves as the anchor of Duke's music. Charted at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1955 (#13 R&B). This record came on the heels of Hibbler's biggest hit, "Unchained Melody" which charted at #3 on the Hot 100 in April of the same year. Also #10 for the McGuire Sisters. In 1966, the Righteous Brothers charted at #18 with their version. Unchained Melody was released about 1955 and was recorded by a bunch of folks, most of them charting well in the US and England. This 1955 version by Al Hibbler made #3 on the Billboard Charts for that year. Not quite as powerful as the 1965 Righteous Brothers version, but still pretty good and historically significant.
