I was at the Kansas city aviation expo/airshow (in wheeler downtown airport, KC, Missouri) on Aug 20th and witnessed a biplane crash (the airplane is the "Beast") and was piloted by Bryan Jensen. I was taking pictures and thought why not take a video even though my camera is a Sony W-350, because I loved his stunts. But no sooner did I start recording he crashed nose first. New video emerged on Monday of a deadly crash at an air show in Reno, Nev., last week as the toll from the accident climbed to 10 after another hospitalized victim died late on Sunday, The Associated Press reported. The video was shown as part of a segment on NBC's "Today" show and captured the fearsome descent and terrifying impact of the plane, a World War II vintage P-51 Mustang fighter, as it smashed into the ground adjacent to the crowd on Friday. In the clip that was shown on NBC, the gray belly of the plane can be seen from below as it dived toward the camera. The footage is among several videos of the accident captured by spectators taping the show. Amateur videographers also captured a second crash at an air show in Martinsburg, W.Va., a day later. That crash, which killed the stunt pilot, occurred far from the spectator stands, and there were no casualties on the ground. As my colleague Jesse McKinley reports from Reno, investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board who were examining debris from the crash in Nevada found a box containing a memory card believed to have recorded information about the plane's final moments. A look at the July 27, 2002, Ukraine Air Show Disaster. The two Ukrainian pilots who survived the world's worst air show disaster in which 85 people died are blamed for the crash. Both pilots parachuted to safety and were arrested at the scene. The preliminary inquiry by the authorities in the Ukraine found the two men had ignored orders and performed a series of unauthorised stunts. The report also found that the pilots had not been given the opportunity to train enough for the air show, the flight zone was too small and organisers of the show had violated safety rules by allowing spectators to stand so close to the flying area. Evhen Marchuk, head of the National Security and Defence Council, who led the state commission into the accident, put most of the blame on the pilots of the Russian-made Sukhoi Su-27 that plunged into the crowds at the Lviv air show last month. He said they had made a major mistake in attempting a rolling maneuver seconds before the disaster. The two ejected to safety and were being treated in hospital. Marchuk, who will release the completed inquiry report next month, said: "A direct reason for the Sukhoi Su-27 crash during the air show in Lviv was the violation of a flight order when a maneuver, which was not allowed, was executed."
