We show the element ruthenium and the interesting property that it is immune to hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. Even when combined to make the gold-dissolving acid "Aqua Regia" the element ruthenium is completely immune to it. So how do you dissolve ruthenium? I was refining dental gold fillings here, consisting of 75% gold. Not a really spectacular video, but nice to see the king of metals, gold going into solution in aqua regia. People who don't know anything about chemistry would go crazy when seeing their precious metal 'dissappear' :P ! Aqua regia is a 3:1 mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and nitric acid respectively, and it fumes and gives of chlorine and nitrogen oxides constantly, therefore it should never be stored. Both of these acids can't do it on their own. Nitric acid acts as the oxidiser, and as soon as Au(III) forms, it is stabilised by the chloride-ions, as the AuCl4(-) ion. Nitric acid also reacts with chloride in such and acidic environment, forming chlorine, NO2 and NOCl, These can act as the oxidiser as well. Be careful, the gasses and fumes (HCl/HNO3) produced from aqua regia itself and durin dissolution are highly toxic. Perform in a very well ventilated area, like outside or in a fume hood.. + Informações

ATTENTION: Due to the large amount of spam and repeat questions in the comments I have decided to disable comments and instead to a write up in here about everything that was discussed. First of all this was never about making money and is not a good way to make money, it was only to show the science. I did not do things in the cheapest way either. Yes, a good idea would to wash the chip in nitric acid to dissolve any copper and silver away, then in aqua regia to remove the gold. You could also take that powder I ended up with and wash that in nitric. Either way, without doing that magnesium drops all the metals dissolved. This was a very old ceramic chip, so there was not a whole lot of other metals on it. Sodium metabisulfate is a better dropping reagent and is more commonly used. It is more selective and cheaper. I have had some trouble with it and as I said had no intention of making money so I just used magnesium metal. Only CPUs contain recoverable gold as far as I'm aware. This will not recover gold from your HDD, motherboard, or any other component. The HCl I purchased at Home Depot. The nitric acid was purchased from Elemental Scientific, and the bottle the nitric acid is stored in was purchased from HMS Beagle.
