I am slowly beginning to introduce myself to Haydn's works which prove to be, quite often, refreshingly delightful but not as well represented on YouTube as they could be, so I've decided to post several of my personal selections from his various works, though, as I am still listening to most of them, the uploads will be posted in a slightly chaotic fashion, thus, we start with the next to last piece from "La fedelta premiata", one of Haydn's last operas. "La fedelta premiata" (or "Fidelity rewarded") is a dramma giocoso in three acts, written to commemorate the opening of the new Eszterházy opera house which was not completed in 1780, as it was planned, thus the opening of both the building, along with it Haydn's new work, was put off until February 25 of the following year. "La fedelta", though, was to become one of Haydn's most successful comedies, and it stayed in the repertory in Eszterháza until 1785. The libretto, by Giambattista Lorenzi, was already set by Cimarosa in 1779 (and Haydn probably made reference to its' score in several sections of his version), and, to make his new version, Lorenzi rethought (and in two cases combined) some of the characters, and gave the piece, which had originally been full of regional dialect and coarse humor, a more refined mood. The final product is an effective combination of comic and serious elements, and it drew from Haydn some of his best operatic writing. History (based on materials from the Grove Dictionary of Music): By 1763, the success of "Orfeo" still echoing, Gluck was an increasingly sought-after composer, a fact most notably demonstrated by the petition of his benefactor, the Genoan Count Giacomo Durazzo, to the Empress for an annual pension of 600 gulden which would give Gluck, already in negotiations with representatives of the new Teatro Comunale in Bologna for a dramma per musica, a reason to remain in Vienna. The latter talks ended with a commission for "Il trionfo di Clelia" which led to Gluck's absence from Vienna until June 6. By that time the project for an opera for the Emperor's nameday went to Tomasso Traetta. Instead, Durazzo asked Gluck to compose what later turned to be his final opéra comique, a setting of "Les pèlerins de la Mecque", an old classic readapted as a modern comédie mêlée d'ariettes. The opera was nearly ready for its première when the illness and subsequent death on November 27, 1763, of Archduke Joseph's wife, Isabella of Parma, closed the Viennese theatres. The opera was finally given on January 7, 1764, with the new title "La rencontre imprévue", to a warm reception and subsequent European recognition. Narrative: The Turkish setting of the work is a direct inspiration for the similarly constructed (though on the whole more grandiose in conception) "Die Entführung aus dem Serail". Giovanni Battista Bononcini (18 July 1670 -- 9 July 1747) was an Italian Baroque composer and cellist, one of a family of string players and composers. His father, Giovanni Maria Bononcini (1642-78), was a violinist and a composer. Giovanni Battista trained as a cellist in Bologna, where he published two collections of trios (1685) and three of sinfonie (1685-7); he was a member of the Accademia Filarmonica, a musician at San Petronio (for which he composed two Lenten oratorios, 1687-8) and finally maestro di cappella at San Giovanni in Monte until 1689 - his four double-choir Masses, published in 1688 as op. 7, were composed for the services there. Griselda is a dramma per musica in three acts that was composed by Bononcini. The opera uses a revised version of the 1701 Italian libretto by Apostolo Zeno that was based on Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron (X, 10, "The Patient Griselda").
