After understanding this definition of the Arabic word deen, we realize that it is wrong to translate it to the English with the word "religion". As Christians we believe both Testaments (or Covenants) are authoritative. The Old Testament, written between 1400 BC and 400 BC lays a foundation, preparing the world for the coming of the Messiah (whom we and Muslims know as Jesus Christ). The New Testament, written in the 1st century AD is the fulfillment of everything the Old Testament promised, providing us with the story of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, how he died and rose again for our salvation, how the early church was formed, and how, using Jesus as a model, we are to live today. Therefore, we no longer need to go to the Old Testament as a model for how we should live. It is Christ's example, in the New Testament where we now find that model. Furthermore, we don't need any further revelation after the New Testament, and so do not need yet another prophet (such as Muhammad), or a further scripture (such as the Qur'an), especially ones which contradicts so much of what was in the Bible. Abrogation means that the abrogated verse remains in the Qur'an. If that were not true, then there would be no need for the "Islamic Science" of abrogation (al-Naisikh wal-Mansukh) which determines which verses abrogate (because they were revealed later in Medina) and which verses are abrogated (because they were revealed earlier in Mecca when Mohammad was weak). By this process, Muslims can claim (and many make a big point of it) that there are no contradictions in the Qur'an. The whole doctrine of abrogation is designed to prove two untruths - that there are no contradictions in the Qur'an and that if there are conradictions, then the verse that was revealed later overules (or abrogates) the one that was revealed earlier. The second untruth is proved to be so by the fact the abrogated verses are mostly the verses that are produced when trying to convert somebody to Islam (or at interfaith meetings) to prove that Islam is peaceful, tolerant and superior to all other religions. Then when we find out that the verses that are abrogated are the religiously tolerant and non-violent ones it is hard to escape the conclusion that in his physical journey from Mecca to Medina he also underwent a psychological journey - from mystic to Mobster. Hadiths confirm this conclusion by explaining the difference by pointing to Mohammad's lack of power before he moved to Medina.
