In 1995 I was hired by Verve Records to create a video to promote Abbey Lincoln's new recording, "A Turtle's Dream". The album had already been recorded and Verve decided they had something special and wanted to promote it, an unusual move for a jazz label. I met with Abbey and suggested an approach; we would treat the music as if they were in rehearsal and working out which songs to record. She would talk about the songs she wrote as only she could. It would be informal, as if the viewer were invited in on the session. To save money, we recorded in her apartment, which added to the intimate feeling. Abbey wrote what she sang and felt every word of every song. She was a force. It was great to meet her and to spend time with the other musicians. I felt privileged to be around such talent and have the opportunity to talk to them about their music. She was phenomenal. I was on a high for a week after being so immersed in her music.. + Informações
