The Life and Times of Tommy Tomlinson (Original Recording by Johnny Horton) Tommy Tomlinson was born on October 28th, 1930 in Hampton, Arkansas (AR). The Tomlinson family resided on a farm located just a few miles away from Johnny Cash's farm between Kingsland and Tinsman, Arkansas (approximately 75 miles south of Little Rock, AR). After a flood destroyed most of the area, many families had no choice but to move out. The Cash family moved to Dyess, Arkansas and the Tomlinson's moved to Minden, Louisiana in 1940. Later on, Tommy's brother, Bill, joined the US Navy to serve in World War II and gave his guitar to Tommy. A friend of Tommy's taught him how to play a few chords and by the age of fifteen he had his own band and was playing bar dances and social events. But before Tommy could really get going, he joined the Marine Corp (Feb., 1951) and served in Korea. After his discharge (1953), Tommy joined the Louisiana Hayride staff band. He also began to record with artists on the Hayride at the time. In 1954, Tommy met up with Johnny Horton and he began recording with Johnny in 1956. Tommy became a bit of a fixture on Johnny's sessions, including such hits as Honky-Tonk Man, The Battle of New Orleans, Sink The Bismarck and North to Alaska. With Tillman Franks on bullfiddle bass, Tommy become the nucleus of Horton's touring band. Country Music's Fifteen Greatest Tragedies (1/2) Cline (9/8/1932 - 3/5/1963), Copas (/15/1913 - 3/5/1963), Hawkins (12/22/1921 - 3/5/1963) and Randy Hughes perished in a plane crash on 3/5/1963. Hughes was Cline's manager and pilot of the plane. They were returning to Nashville, after performing at a benefit show in Kansas City, Kansas, for the family of a disc jockey, Cactus Jack Call, who had recently died in an automobile accident. After stopping to refuel in Dyersburg, Tennessee, the plane took off at 6:07 pm The airfield manager suggested that they stay the night after advising of high winds and inclement weather on the flight path, but Hughes brushed off his suggestion. The plane flew into severe weather, however and according to Cline's wristwatch, crashed at 6:20 pm in a forest outside of Camden, Tennessee. Cline was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973. Anglin, Jack ~5/13/1916 -- 3/8/1963: Jack began his music career with his brothers. In 1939, he joined Johnnie Wright and as a duo, they became 'Johnnie and Jack', who had success performing on the Grand Ole Opry, recording and touring. He was killed at age 46, in an auto accident while on the way to Patsy Cline's funeral. Driving alone not far from his home, he rounded a bend in Madison, Tennessee at a high speed and died in the ensuing crash. Horton, Johnny ~ In1960, Johnny was getting premonitions of an early death. Johnny Horton: The Eerie Demise of Johnny Horton Of all the singers who broadened the country music landscape in the '50s, Johnny Horton is probably the least known. Johnny, who made his name as a honky-tonk singer with strong rockabilly tendencies, skyrocketed to fame in 1959, with his recording of The Battle of New Orleans. Horton began his career working on the Home Town Jamboree in El Monte, California. By the mid-'50s, he was a regular on The Louisiana Hayride originating on station KWKH, Shreveport, Louisiana. Johnny came eerily close to predicting the manner of his death. He believed he would be killed by a drunk in a bar. His premonitions come to pass when he died from a fatal car crash in 1960. His career may have been cut short, but his music reverberated for decades. Johnny Horton was born in Los Angeles in 1925, the son of sharecropping parents. His mother taught him how to play guitar at an early age. After Horton graduated from high school in 1944, he began traveling across the country, eventually moving to Alaska in 1949.
