They say "Variety is the spice of life". The key to a deeper understanding of diversity begins first with awareness - awareness that we're a world of diverse people. Some identify the importance of breaking cultural barriers. We shouldn't aim to break these barriers-- but rather, become aware of them and build bridges between them. Diversity is what surrounds and sets us apart, yet we're united in our differences. Diversity should be a celebration of life. My name is Danielle and I am a sophomore studying fine arts and economics at the University of Toronto. Global citizenship is a responsibility I've been made aware of since coming to Canada and has been a constant journey of deepening my own understanding of diversity. I came to Canada at the curious age of four and never understood the need to leave the warm islands of the Philippines where I was born. Soon after, I found more to be fascinated by than the snow fall that was unusual back home. Multiculturalism defines Canada's culture by embracing diversity under one nation. I began to understand my parents' choice to come here was for greater opportunities. Coming from a developing country with an uneven wealth distribution, I'm fortunate to develop my full potential here. The moment that defined my global awareness was officially becoming a Canadian citizen. I found a place within my country and began to wonder - where did I fit in with the rest of the world? Semester at Sea is a multi-country study abroad program that educates individuals for leadership, service, and success in shaping our interdependent world. During a fall or spring semester, students experience 10-12 countries while circumnavigating the globe, earning 12-15 credits from the University of Virginia (U.Va.). Summer semesters are more regionally focused, usually featuring 8 countries. Students earn 9-12 credits from U.Va. on summer voyages.. + Informações
