Never No is the first single off of J. Pinder's upcoming full length Careless and it's a banger. Pounding ahead at full throttle, interwoven with soul, sonic depth and serious bounce, the Pinder / Martin Feveyear / Kuddie Fresh produced Never No is the quintessential lead off track. The track begins with a tip of the hat to Marvin Gayes classic "What's Going On". Featured backing vocalists Dice, Choklate, Tiffany Wilson, Zach Bruce, Blakk Soul and Pinder playfully work up the hook. Then, the first sliced organ notes of the Kuddie Fresh produced beat drops evoking nods from even the most cynical of heads. A thumping bass line and a swinging snare take it up another level. Regal trombones ring in and Pinder addresses the mic. J.'s always confident voice speaks to the hip hop industry itself with thoughtful insight and clear vision, "It's a shame what a little fame will do to you / Turn a revolutionary to politics as usual" and soon Pinder and Dice deliver the chorus over a sweeping bed of synths, syncopated guitar hits and bumping beat. After Pinder?s poetic, and at times, frenetic travels through the fame machine we are gently led out by a winding PCM synth line and swirl of intoxicating harmonies courtesy of the crew of talented guests. They used to be called haters. The people who push their own sense of self loathing and misery on you, telling you that what you pursue is not attainable, that you will amount to nothing. They can be peers, enemies, friends, family even the media. J. Pinder and Bay Area MC Mistah FAB tackle them head on in Pinder's newest cut "Dream Killers" and dodge every countermove of those shifty killers with ease. As the Pinder, Ben Pramuk and Martin Feveyear produced beat rolls in with filtered synths chiming and a bit reduced bass line J. arrives first. With trademark lyrical tact, confident delivery Pinder reflects, "Sometimes I wonder if I'm too real, too down to earth, not enough fun / Not enough play, too much work, not enough sun". Lead PWM synths cut across blare as he describes where and what he has heard from the dream killers over the years, "Heard it too many times that I'll forever stay local" and unlike other anti-hater anthems you get the real sense that Pinder is indeed showing us his hand. The dream killers have hurt him, their words have injured him. However in typical J. Pinder fashion he follows up with determination, hope and courage, "They are the misery, that loves company/ They are my motivation/ They are my inspiration" and you feel that. Mike formed The Moody Blues in 1964. After their chart hit Go Now in 1965, Pinder obtained a Mellotron from his previous employers Streetly Electronics and used it on numerous Moody Blues recordings, beginning with the single Love and Beauty. He introduced the Mellotron to The Beatles, and is widely known for his innovation and mastery of the mellotron sounds. His philosophy, melodies, counter melodies, arrangements and conceptual ideas laid the groundwork for the Moody Blues unique style and musical direction. Pinder retired from the group in 1979 and has continued to work in the studio on his own and others projects, and in developing new artists and nurturing the creative process. But what are the differences? Sure, Justin's version is more ethereal. So I mashed them into a single video. I had to change Mike's by a few seconds to get the music beat to line-up. And I changed the Right-Left balance so that each singer has a different position. Having done that, a number of things pop out. First, Justin's vocal timing is slightly off at times - no doubt intentional. That lets you hear them distinctly during the verses. When the chorus hits, everyone is in time. Coincidence? Again, I don't think so. "When we are one, we're all the same, and life is just a simple game." I had two goals in the video. One, getting across Pinders original idea that when life returns to simplicity, life without roadblocks, destructive competition, etcetera. The other was to overlay the idea of mother nature returning planet earth the the way is was during early humanity, or earlier. Thats why I used the forest and tree analogies. In the bridge the bare trees, and sharded worn trees long to be in full bloom, part of a forest (community) with abundant water & light. In the end, both man & tree coexist, some land used for food, some trees used for fences, but overall mother nature holds the reins.
