The King Of Comedy was the fifth collaboration for Director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert DeNiro and told the story of wannabe saddo and autograph collector Rupert Pupkin (DeNiro) on a personal mission to become a successful stand up comedian. After a chance meeting with his idol, TV personality Jerry Langford, played here by TV personality Jerry Lewis, Pupkin is led to believe that Langford has given him the ok for a kick start on his path for success. But as the movie progresses we see that he is a delusional, compulsive liar that lives with his mum and has been simply fobbed off by Langford. Scorsese and DeNiro had already proven to be a partnership made in celluloid heaven, with gritty and grimy features such as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull under their belts. So by the time that King Of Comedy was released, critics and audiences alike had probably built up their own expectations of what kind of films this pair would make. Maybe this was the reason that the movie was so poorly received on its initial release, the critics waiting like vultures to rip at the fresh corpse of a dud movie. Perhaps it was because the movie, although entitled King of Comedy, was not a comedy in the vane as other comedy's currently playing in cinemas, and soon put off the punters on the streets. In fact, I first watched this movie in about 2001, and I believe that the humour in the movie was more suited to that era than 1982 when it was released. From Peoria, Illinois...Here is artist #277, Mr. Personality himself- Alan Gillett! Suburban cowboy, Alan Gillett, croons in the most peculiar Kermit the Frog warble. Alan trekked down to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in Music City Television Network's talent competition- a sort of low budget American Idol for the country crowd. Standing slightly slouched in his black denim, cowboy hat and mustache (and looking a bit like 80s era Beefheart)- Alan is swallowed up by the massive blue carpeted stage (I guess keying in a snazzy background for him was out of the budget). In this monotone sea, being framed dead center is enough to make anyone's effort at entertainment worthless- but Alan makes it work by being so deadpan and monotone himself. Alan eventually loosens up throughout the course of his eleven songs- first by incessantly flapping his hand at his side to keep rhythm and then by dancing...an amazing dance...a stilted step worthy of a spastic with both feet encased in concrete. This famous folk play was written by Vasant Sabnis and especially for Dada Kondke, the famous Marathi actor. It was designed for urban viewers while keeping the rural punches intact. The play follows the format of a Tamasha. The story is that of a king and his scheming prime minister. Following the death of the administrative head - the kotwal, the Prime Minister promptly fills the coveted post with his inept and undeserving brother-in-law. As per the hierarchy, the present Havaldar ought to have been promoted to that post. The wronged Havaldar along with his sweetheart Mainavati plan to frame the new Kotwal. Mainavati works her charms on the Kotwal and then beseeches him to fulfill her numerous wishes (hence the name, Vichha Majhi Poori Kara). She orders him to bring her the king's ring, chain and finally the king's four-poster bed (chhapri palang) - which he does. The play brings out the political undercurrents of nepotism. Its slapstick comedy and wit has had a lasting appeal. Vijay Kadam fame essays the role of Havaldar, which shot Dada Kondke into the limelight. Pak Pak Pakaak is aMarathi movie about a small naughty boy and a supposedly ghost living in a forest. The story is conceptualized by Sai Paranjpe and is very similar to her 2001 movie 'Bhaago Bhoot'. The story is of a parent-less little boy, chiklu who plays pranks on everybody in the village. Her old grandmother is also fed up with his activities that she resorts to punish him now and then. The village is surrounded by a big forest which inhabits a ghost named as ?bhootya?. The villagers are afraid to venture into the forest alone in the fear that they will be harmed by bhootya. Bhootya is actually a herbal doctor living in isolation from the society. He has been wronged and his wife killed which makes him loose hope and trust in humanity.Chiklu while playing another prank on his teacher ventures into the jungle to find he facing Bhootya. After some confrontation, Chiklu and Bhootya accept each other. Bhootya teaches Chiklu to be good and Chiklu convinces him to come back to the society which he had shunned long back. Just as Chiklu changes, he understands the changing attitude of others toward him. He understands that earlier people who had cursed him were appreciative of his behaviour.The journey of Chiklu from being a naughty brat to a nice well-mannered boy is what constitutes the rest of the movie.In spite of having a small boy as a central character, it cannot be termed as a children's film.
