On Saturday, March 27, 2010, Rich and I set out for a weekend of railfanning on the mainlines of CSX and NS in Northwest Ohio. Saturday, though cloudy throughout the day, was extremely promising for train action, with NS and CSX running great. Due to NS's derailment in Waterloo, IN (in which a coal train dropped 38 cars on the ground), NS ran multiple rerouted trains over CSX and the NKP. Enjoy the action! October 2010 It's the first time that an EU country has seen its treatment of refugees described as a humanitarian crisis by the UNHCR. This report gets to the heart of the escalating tensions in Greece. "I've seen too many. They cross the river like bees", sighs a local fisherman. With as many as 400 people crossing the Evros river each day, arrests of illegal immigrants in Greece have exploded from 3500 to 20000 in a year. Most choose to turn themselves in, but they have no idea what awaits them. Infested with rats, Greece's detention centres are now critically overcrowded. Those who try to avoid this fate end up on the streets, such as in Attica Square, home to hundreds of Afghan refugees. With no government support, crime is rife here, and as frustration builds, racial attacks by local vigilantes are escalating beyond control. This year on September 11, India will mark the 105th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi launching the modern nonviolent resistance movement. We play part of a 2003 interview with Gandhi's grandson, Arun. On September 11, 1990, renowned Guatemalan anthropologist Myrna Mack was assassinated in Guatemala City. She had been stalked for two weeks prior to her death by a US-backed military death squad in retaliation for her work to expose and document the destruction of rural indigenous communities by US-backed state forces and allied paramilitary groups. We play part of a 2003 interview with Myrna's sister Helen Mack, who has fought tirelessly to bring justice to people killed by high ranking Guatemalan officials in the armed forces. On September 11, 1993, in the midst of the US-backed coup in Haiti, Antoine Azenery was dragged out of a church by coup forces and murdered in broad daylight. He had been commemorating a massacre of parishioners at the Saint John Boscoe church that had occurred five years earlier on September 11, 1988. Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide narrowly escaped death in that attack, and later became president of Haiti. Dog day afternoon, the retelling of the real life attempted bank robbery in New York by Sonny Wortzik and his partner Sal remains culturally significant because of the character that was Sonny Wortzik and what he stood for, a desperate man in uneasy times. Pacino's performance is so brilliant and captivating that you could pick any amount of time and it would be memorable . I decided to stick with this scene as it involves sonny getting the crowd on his side and effectively manipulating the forces. The use of the word attica is important as this revolves around the police mess up that occured their and even though you cant condone sonny's actions, he becomes something of a legendary anti-hero. Pacino makes the character as desperate and intense as possible and whats also easy to see is the exact tension that takes place.
